I had to in order to hunt a military base. Also sat in on one with my daughter. I dont like the fact they are mandatory. The kid has to set through too much crap. It should be no more than a 2 or 3 hour class with the most important safety issues covered.

took them 28 years ago. Here in NJ you must attend the bow, firearm (shotgun) Rifle (muzzleloader) if you care to hunt with any of the 3

I took my Hunter Education Course in the '80's, my 12 year old daughter took hers 3 years ago and just this past Spring both my sons ( ages 7 & 8) completed the Class as well. Now I have an entire family of deer hunters. :)

I took mine just a few weeks ago.......I didn't have too, but i wanted too....
The instructor was intimidating, but an old softy with me, lol.....but he was a real jerk if you were slacking in any area.
He has to be that way though, it's not a game....
He thought he had to back me up on the skeet shooting, I kinda felt insulted, lol....so i showed him i didn't need his help, lol....i nailed em....;)
All in all it was a great experience....and now i can get my concealed weapons permit and hunt the refuge come duck season....
even if you're old andyou don't have to take it , like myself, i would suggest you takeit just because f the experience...
I'm even thinking about volunteering....
There was one sad note....hardly any kids there, most of them were adults....we have to get them kids out there.

Ijoined my son when he took it onOct 15, 1991 and we both got approved.I was 52 and my son was 13....I was born in 1939 and he was born in 1978....:)

Never took one and I am grandfathered in all the places I hunt that require one. If i need one for a new hunt I will take the course.

My son and I will take one together the first weekend in August. I don't need one unless I want to hunt out of state. He falls in that age bracket that requires it. Now I'm 48 and he'll be 20 this fall. He's never deer hunted before in his life due to playing football in the fall since he was 5 years old. He's in college now starting his second year this fall. I look forward to him being able to go deer hunt with menow.

I took it when my older son was 12. My 15 year old daughter and I both got a perfect score on the test and my son missed two questions which was still a good score. That was in 1995, I was 45 years old and it was not required of me because I was grandfathered in when the law was passed. If I ever get a tag out of state I am good to go now though.

I took mine in Illinois back in 1990. I agree, even at the age of 12 I remember them saying a lot of useless things. I guess though my dad always drove home safety while I was hunting so I may have already been knowledgable on it. I know some people will disagree with me, but they need to rethink how they are doing this. My buddy wants to take it, but 10 hours when he has a kid and works on Saturdays and the closest class is over an hour away. I think it is a bit much for someone who is over 30 to sit in a classroom with 14 yr. olds while they teach the same thing. Indiana it is all done VIA the internet. I think I am going to have him take it through Indiana and have the Card shipped to my friends address in Indiana. I don't see how one state can do it one way and another do it so differently. It just makes such little sense. In my opinion, it should be about 7 hours on the internet and 3 on-site safety, just my opinion though.

Took course in 87'. It is mandatory in Idaho if you are born after Jan. 1st 1975. I wish they would turn it into a school class so all kids went through it, for the gun saftey aspect even if they don't plan to hunt. Our kids are forced to sit through bunny hugger classes with some of their bunny hugger teachers, so maybe taking hunters saftey would even out the propoganda feed to our kids.

i took mine got one question wrong:eek::D i enjoyed it actually. i would do it again but just dont want to take the time when i took it back then it was a two day course here in pa. i had to take it to get my license or so i thought it seems noone asks for anything like that anymore..... makes me feel safe.

Took mine when I was 11 in Colorado. In Wyoming I don't need it because I'm "grandfathered". However, I need WY Hunter Safety to teach Hunter Safety here, so I guess I'm taking it again this fall?

If one does not have the "time" to take the course, how will they ever have time to become profficient with their equipment and to hunt?

My first one ( NYS) was tooken in 1962...

My NYS bow course was tooken sometime in the 70's when it became mandatory...

Then in 1998 or thereabouts, I an internet friend of mine, who lives in Ontario, invited me to hunt gobblers there... Ontario requires a separate Turkey Hunting Safety course for all hunters, experienced or not, so I tooken the eight hour course, despite the fact that I had been hunting turkeys since 1965...

Actually it was kinda fun...Of the 200 or so students in the course, I was the only one who had ever killed a turkey, having killed 75 or 80 at that time..I was quite a celebrity...

If your off day is say a Tuesday and you can make it to the range all day and make sure your gun is ready to go for the season, you certainly will be profficient with your equipment. If the course is only offered on Saturday and Sunday within 2 hours of where you live, then you are in trouble. This is the case for my friend that is trying to take it, even though he isn't required to take it here in Illinois.

Also, I don't know who is married with kids (Luckily, I am not:D) but my buddy has to use up all of his favors with his wife to get away hunting for a few days. Telling her that he has to take a class for two days over an hour away and take off work would not go over well with her. Im not trying to start fights over this topic, but the course is being taught the same way it was 40 years ago. I just think it needs some changes for the technology we have today.
