I had to in order to hunt a military base. Also sat in on one with my daughter. I dont like the fact they are mandatory. The kid has to set through too much crap. It should be no more than a 2 or 3 hour class with the most important safety issues covered.

I took my Hunter Education Course in the '80's, my 12 year old daughter took hers 3 years ago and just this past Spring both my sons ( ages 7 & 8) completed the Class as well. Now I have an entire family of deer hunters.
