.25-06 built on a Springfield military (.30-06) action with a walnut stock crafted by my father. 24" barrel. 3.5-10x 40 mm Leupold VariX-III scope. I took my first deer with this. I shoot Hornady Custom ammo using 117 grain soft point boat tail bullets.

30-30 has never failed me.

However, if I ever hunt mule deer I will go with my savage 300 win mag.

I don't have one single weapon I will always go to. I consider the conditions I will be hunting, length of shots offered, the weather .... even if i am going to be in a particular blind or walking during a still hunting day.
More often than not I'm carrying a 6.5 X 55 Swede sporter, or a Mauser 98 in .243, or a Savage 110 in 30/06.
When the weather is real nasty i have a swede 6.5 X 55 in a composite stock and a treated paint on finish.

WOW elkhunter! Oregon is very restrictive on which weapon you can use. I didn't truly appreciate how good we have it in Maryland.

I have several different rifles that i like to hunt whitetails with, but when serious hunting if afoot my hands always seem to grab old remington 700 in 30-06. It points like a dream and its smooth butter bolt action is fantastic. It would be the last rifle i would part with.
