My first deer I was by myself and she ran off 40 yards and went down ina clump of sage brush. I knew to wait but paniced and about 10 min later started to approach. I was going to see if her eyes were open or shut. I got w/in 10 yds and she got up and ran. She ran into some less dense bushes and I could see her and tried to get close to see her eyes and she ran again. I tracked her to the other side of the top of the mountain and could see her laying down in the sage and rocks on the exposed hill side. I sat down and waited. I could see that her eyes were open and was sure she had died. Just to be sure I took a rock and threw it and it hit right behind her rear end. She didn't move. I threw another and it landed right next to her right side, no movement. I threw another and it landed right next to her muzzle, again no movement. So I took no more than 3 steps down the mountain toward her and she ran off another 40 yards. Laid under a tree and went belly up and died. The only good thing was that she ran almost right to the road my truck was parked on. I learnd two things, 1) don't chase them because they can run far even with a solid shot, and 2) don't ever trust a deer.

As a youngster I made the mistake of approaching a deer too soon after shooting him.. He ended up jumping down a river bank and swimming across onto someones property i had specific permission NOT to be on.. I still regret being so anxious to this day
