Sometime around Turkeyday this year I will be going on my first hunt. AFAIK it will be in Upshur County, WV. Me being from Houston, I expect that tromping around in what will feel like the arctic will be the worst of it for me. I will be going with 2 different people that have hunted that area their whole life. I still have to get a rifle, used to have a Ruger 77 in 270 so I will most likely stick with 270, seems versitle enough and there are lots of guns chambered in it. Aside from that just have to find some cold weather gear, which can be hard here. Any suggestions on where to look online for big/tall (6'5" avg build)gear? Heck, any suggestions would be welcome.

I hunt Wirt County and it just ain't that common for it to be real cold, I pretty much just wear normal cloths, jeans with long johns if it is freezing and layers on top, thermal shirt, flannel shirt then a sweat shirt, hooded sweat shirt and heavy vest just depending on the weather. I think it can be more uncomfortable being too hot and sweating than it is to feel a little bit cold.
I guess you can check out Cabelas.

Over the past 5 years, it has probably averaged in the mid 30's during the first week of rifle season. Be sure to start hunting on opening day if you can. The deer will be more nocturnal by Turkey day!

Not that cold that time of year but for cold weather, if in the 20's(which I doubt) more like the 30's,perhaps even higher. Go with thin polyproplyene long johns, polypro liner socks with acrylic or wool wicking socks over top. No cotton against the skin...Layer clothes so that you can adjust for warmth/cooling in the field. A decent rain gear setup is a must. Boots of your choice, 400-1000 gram thinsulate depending on whether you walk, sit, still hunt etc. Thin pair of gloves, thinsulate if your hands get cold easy...
Don't forget your balze orange. You'll need 400sq in. for WV, I use a hat and vest....
Weather there is unpredictable at best...The first week of Dec 2002 found our group bear hunting in t-shirts by noon....that was an odd season...

DougMD-
Plan on being there the whole weeek, what I have seen is it starting on the 25th. So I should be able to do that.
Cyclone-
We have a Bass Pro Shops here, will go check them out. Will primarily be walking I believe, will have to check on that. I was wanting to do bear as well but cant weasle away from work long enough, guess that will have to wait for another year.

Cyclone is pretty much on the mark. I think the last 4 years on opening day the weather has gone from one extreme to another. If your going to be in the Hemlock area of Upsher Co., it can be a little colder than in some of the other parts of the county.
