Crossing U.S./Canadian border with longarms, only to pass thru?
I just spent a little bit of time on the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol website and didn't really find what I was looking for, so I'm wondering if anyone has experience to share.
I just moved to CT and will continue to do my deer hunting in MI. According to Mapquest, the most direct route is to cross the southern arm of Ontario, crossing at Buffalo and coming back into MI at Sarnia.
My question is what are the regulations for just passing through Canada with longarms? Everything I find talks about crossing to hunt in Canada/US.
Thanks!

Hi,
Greeting from a fellow citizen of CT where the first deer seaon begins in a month.
As I understand it, to enter Canada with a long gun in your personal baggage you must get the appropriate Canadian permit regardless of your ultimate destination. It is not too difficult to get one (I get one most years to hunt in Quebec) but it will set you back a few bucks (about 30, if I recall correctly). The Canadian police take their gun laws very seriously so don't even think of passing through the border without a permit.

Try this link.

Also, don't forget to stop in US customs before you cross in to Canada to declare your gun so they don't charge you tax on your gun when you re-enter the USA.
