now before i get roasted for this im assuming this is illagal....but..i hear alot of guys talking about their mini food plots they are growing in the woods....not sure if they are referring to public or private land but what exactly are the restrictions on this? it does have to be YOUR property to do this leagaly right?

It's illegal here, but I know people do it. I have seen alfalfa and stuff like that planted in the national forest here. They only seem to put it within about 100 yards from the main road on the pipeline right-of-way that runs through it. Who would have thought they would be lazy?

Rules vary state by state on what a sportsman is allowed to do on public ground. You'll have to check the site specific rules of the tract you'd like to plant.
I love the work and pride involved in making and maintaining foodplots but the only ground I ever hunt is completely private.

well the reason im wondering is the land we hunt is public, its NOT gamelands, and me and about 5 others (all related) are the only ones who hunt here....so if i were to be able to plant one i shouldt have too much of a problem keeping it to myself.....im going to have to find one of my old books that come with the license and see what it says.....i would imagine this would fall under baiting but we'll see.....

I have a couple of apple-crab trees in my back yard that produce about pool ball sized fruit. About 20 years ago (still do it every year) I started planting some of the seeds on public land where I hunt (not many hunters in these areas, and even less today). I would find areas where there were large openings in the tree canapies so that if they took the young trees would get lots of sun (just something added to do while scouting). I'm sure I planted thousands of seeds, but over the years there have been 18 to 20 trees that have took and are producing very well. There are always excellent trails to these trees and I have taken many deer setting up about 75- 100 yards from thefruit producing trees. I don't know if this is consideredplanting a food plot but boy do they pull in the deer.I don't think it could ever beillegal to plant a tree in a forest.
