RE: Is deer meat really needed?
Buckmine, Why not shoot some does for the freezer?
My super sportsmans license cost me 68 dollars, broadheads $30,shotgun slugs about ten bucks.I killed three deer this season.I made 48 lbs of sausage I cut it 50/50 with pork. A bunch of jerky I use scrap meat not steak cuts. And my freezer is packed for about $150 dollars including the pork meat.I can still fish all year hunt small game and turkey hunt in the spring. Venison is very much like veal. You need to prepare it like you would veal. I have never got a gamey taste from venison. Eastwood, Do you cut up your own deer or have it processed? RE: Is deer meat really needed?
....who cares if beef is cheaper? This whole argument about "we don't need to kill deer since we have grocery stores" is completely without merit. Following that same logic, why would anyone ever plant a garden? Or go fishing? I hunt because I enjoy it... and I enjoy eating venison. And I don't expect it to taste like beef. Here's a news flash.... IT'S NOT BEEF! You don't cut into a pork chop and say, "Hey, this tastes "wild" because it doesn't tase like beef" do you? If you want to pay some stranger to do your slaughtering and butchering for you, then by all means do so. I do it, too, for my beef. I also have a taste for other meats besides beef, and I like knowing how to harvest and prepare my own game. And I also don't feel as though I need to justify my hunting to the "bunny people"... although I'm happy to do so.
Surprisingly, there are many vegans, and some vegetarians that understand and support hunting. Most of them don't like to see animals penned up in feedlots, and put through the rather brutal process of the slaughterhouse.....in other words, it's cruel to the animals. But taking an animal from the wild is understandable to them. "Progress, far from consisting in change, depends on retentiveness..those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." RE: Is deer meat really needed?
lemme just start by saying, i love to hunt just as much as the next guy/gal. probably even more so. however, im surrounded by friends and family that dont hunt. not that hey are against it, they just dont. and to be honest, i wouldnt wnat to walk next to the majority of them with a loaded rifle. some people just dont undersant the safty aspect. anywho, i ive never learned how to make a venison meal. the first deer i killed i made a stew and it made me sick. to answer your question charlie, no i dont butcher my own kill. i dont have the resources. so since the stew incident, ive been carfule not to relive that episode. so when i do harvest a deer, i just make jerkey, bbq the loins and chili from the ground. and i assumed everyone else did the same. i guess i need to find someone who knows how to handle and cook venison so i can learn. another thought, i dont want to experiment because i dont want to waste my meat.

RE: Is deer meat really needed?
For most people, I don't think deer meat is needed. But then there is so much in our lives these days that are not really needed. Last week we lost power in an ice storm for over 3 days. That simple, short lesson can wake you up on what is important. For the most, deer meat costs more than beef due to licenses, gear, special camo (in our head), gas to/from, leases, etc, etc. But in my simple opinion, it is this:
We have seperated ourselves so far from reality. Deer hunting gives us a chance to "simulate" the days when we had to actually go out and get food for our family. I think for men, it's a sub-conscience activity to provide for our families. But due to the reality gap, it's transpired into a sport, family get together, or whatever purpose we use deer hunting for. May it never go away. JMHO |

Helpless Saint, What are your shoes and boots and belt and leather coat made of?
|
RE: Is deer meat really needed?
There made of synthetic material. I'm a vegan so all the clothes I buy and the food I eat have no leather or any other animal parts. It is so easy to live a life free of leather or meat. Theres no need for your type of jobs.

RE: Is deer meat really needed?
Why do you feel that it is okay to brutually kill these magnificent animals to fulfill your selfish ways? They have as much of a right to live a long happy life such as yourself.
