Default CWD Slaughter

I have been reading some information on the Chronic Wasting Disease in some states. Wisconson and Nebraska are the two I saw. Are there others? They are wanting people to shoot every deer they see? Man that is serious! What is everyone's thoughts on this? Is it really that bad that all the deer have to be slaughtered?

Haven't heard anything about that yet. Any links to some online info on those stories?

It has been an issue for a while. I cannot believe it hasn't been on the news more. It looks to me like there haven't been enough deer havested in the past, and they are overpopulated. That is natures way of thinning out the weak since man doesn't do it. I am not sure how I feel about slaughtering all of them on site though. It seems like it would be a case by case basis. The slaughter may be too little too late.

http://www.caids-wi.org/is one link but you can do a search and find many more.

I've heard about the CWD just not the slaughtering end of it. Sounds like another game management program gone wrong. Wonder where the anti's are in all of this<img src=icon_smile_shock.gif border=0 align=middle>

I read about Wisconsin on MSN this morning. Said guys were allowed to kill as many as they could see. I would think they need the carcases out of the woods though so nothing would eat them. boy I would hate to have to drag them all out though. Also could you imagine all the shooting going on! it would be like WWIII. In PA there hasn't been any cases found yet but it's still effecting the hunters. alot of the processors because they also have a regular business with ham, turkey, and beef, they don't want to risk losing that business for the extra cash they get for the deer processing.

In Saskatchewan, their have been 4 documented cases in the wild deer population, all have been mule deer in 2 seperate zones. In those areas the DNR has offered CWD tags to local farmers or gone with a public CWD hunt for mature does of either whitetail or mule deer. I have heard numbers of tags from 5-15,000 were available. Plus in the future area farmer that have large populations of deer will continue to get these free of charge tags to hand out to hunters if they choose, those numbers are 20-100 being stated. They are serious about stopping CWD, even with the small number our DNR are not even in a wait and see mode, like the states you mentioned were in and now they face a critical situation...such as a mass slaughter. It does seem like averkill, but they must try to stop CWD and it's spread. If that means hunters or professional shooters, it appears it will be done.

CWD was found in Wisconsin's wild deer herd for the first time last year. The WI DNR felt that is was a serious threat to the whole herd. Wisconsin has had a serious deer overpopulation problem recently (according to their statistics). The deer numbers are beyond the carrying capacity of the land. After the initial initial discovery, two more cases were found around the same small area. They felt (or hoped) the disease might be centralized and contained in an isolated area. Further testing indicated that the disease had spread and they set up an eradication zone. They figured they better try to nip the problem in the bud. They now want to eliminate every deer in a 400+ sq. mile zone. They figure that would be about 25,000 deer. Seems like a lot, but not so big when dealing with a deer herd popultion estimated at 1.6 million. This seems drastic, but so is the disease. It is new to our area and there are to many uncertains about CWD to let it go rapant. If they (DNR) can control or at least contain the disease, they might buy some time to figure out what to do later.

The eradication zone herd numbers will be effected immediatly for the short term, but the long term effects of doing nothing far outweigh what seems like slaughter.

Does it seem worth it to kill a deer and drag it out, just to turn it over to the DNR (or dump it)? YES, it is worth it if it will prevent future deer from being infected with the terminal disease.

In this case &quot;the needs of the many are greater than the nees of the one (or few).

WT: This is not natures way of takeing care of overpopulation. Theres all kinds of info on WI's problem at the link above. We are on the down slope of this eradication now. Theres only about a month and a half of killing left. They were hoping for a kill of 25,000 deer in that 465 sq. mile area. (Which by the way is an 11 or so mile circle drawn around my house.) Last I checked, I think we had about 11,000 and some change. You think this sucks? You should live and hunt around my neighborhood. We had 4 one week hunts in the summer months, and they have been pounded hard since Oct. 24 non stop. Deer sightings have dropped and hunter participation has fallen off to near nil. Rumors say the DNR will cease this madness at the end of Jan. instead of extending it. Eradication isn't working here. 2 more possitives have been found outside the zone. One would drastically extend the current zone and the other would create a new zone. Thats not to say that some of the rest of the tests will not come back possitive. We collected a little over 36,000 deer heads for testing throughout the state this fall. We might have 10% of them analized at present if we're lucky. To say this disease is isolated in a small area is a joke. Lots of neighboring states, and perhaps yours, are now doing large scale testing. Comeing soon to a woods near you. CWD
