Default Scrapes...

Does anyone have any insight as to how a deer chooses a spot for a scrape? I understand the low hanging, chewed on limb but do they usually do themon the edge of the woods/hedgerow? Are they done at a crossroads in trails?or really anywhere? Just wondering...thinking about next season and making a few where we saw some tracks today...
Thanks for any input in advance!
Sean

I've seen them in almost any part of the woods. Most of them are along edges, trailsand woods roads, but I've seen them anywhere, except very wet areas.

Remember a scrape is a signpost -

Deer select an area that THEY expect other deer and especially does - to frequent.

In my experience - the best places to expect scrapes are in "staging areas" downwind ofa food source. Think of an area of cover where deer will hang before they go to feed - and linger AFTER they feed.

The next best spots are on logging roads or brushogged roadways Through cover. You can enhance a spot by using cord to "pull down" trees to overhang a roadway. Also - you can clip away - branches that overhang - NOT WHERE you want them to scrape.

The next best spot would be on ridges - along well traveled deer trails.

I think they put scrapes down where does in the area frequent the most or where there is more competition.
