RE: Long range hunting! *VIDEO*
Petasux says, "If someones dumb enough to be influenced into thinking they can shoot like that from a video on the internet my personal opinion is they shouldnt be out shooting at animals anyway." My point is simple. If someone has the equipment, knowledge, experience and is successful in some long range shooting of big game. Don't video it and spread it on the Internet and on cable programs with the direct or implied message. "Yeah, I did this... so can you!" It's disrespecting hunting as a sport and the animals we hunt. I don't like that at all.[:'(] |
RE: Long range hunting! *VIDEO*
Is it just me or do they appear to be shooting over a road on the first deer?
Suchlong range shootingis somethingvery small %of the shooting population could do on a regular basis. Hitting a pie plate don't cut the mustard at any distance for me. My rule of thumb is1/2 that size shows mewhat I could even consider a shot on a game animal in terms of distance, even at that others things come into the equation. Shooting is a skill like any other. That saidI prefer a wedge vs a long iron!;) I agree with MinnFinn, not a flattering reflection of our sport.[:-] |
RE: Long range hunting! *VIDEO*
WhileI acknowledge the skill required to hit a target that far away I just personally don't care for trying shotsat live game from those distances. I also wonder as another poster said before how often they wound animals they never find.I found it sort of telling when that one guy on that video said, "Now you hit that one" after one shot. The way he said that sort of implied that they hadn't hit some of them. I have read some threads at a few websites that actually have a permanent long range hunting section in their forums. Despite the way that video makes it look these guys who do thisdo not score consistent first shot hits on these deer from those distances. They miss a lot and with good reason. Even slight shifts in wind speed or direction can change your POI notby a number ofinches butby a number offeet at 800 to 1000 yards. My personal belief is that you should limit your shot distance to the range at which you can consistently score a first shot lethal hit the vast majority of the time. That distance will of course vary from hunter to hunter butI don't think that anyone no matter how much they practice can consistently hit the vitals on a deer at 890 yards with their first shot. There arejust too many variables.

RE: Long range hunting! *VIDEO*
ORIGINAL: ipscshooter So, how close does one have to get in order for it to be hunting? 500 yards? 300 yards? 200 yards? 199 yards? 100yards? What if you say 100, and somebody shoots one at 102 yards? Is that person suddenly just a "shooter" and not a "hunter"? I get tired of how everyone gets categorized here. Some say you aren't a hunter because you shoot too far. Others say you aren't a hunter because you are on a fenced property. Bowhunters say you aren't a hunter because you use a rifle. Longbow hunters say you aren't a hunter because you use a compound. Come on guys. If it's legal, and someone is in the woods seeking game animals, and they're considering their limitations when selecting shots they think they can make cleanly, then they're hunting. What if those were prairie dogs instead of deer? Would you still be complaining? This long range stuff is just a different type of hunting. One that I'd never engage in largely because I don't have the skill set needed to make a shot like that. I won't shoot beyond a range at which I'm reasonably comfortable that I can make a good shot. |

RE: Long range hunting! *VIDEO*
Probably a custom rifle chambered in .30-378 WBY Mag.which is a flat shooting.30 caliber bullet traveling in excess of 3500 ft per sec would be my guess.
