shooting LR is the easy part,
I thought you said setting up in the right place and seeing deer at close range was the easy part and that's why you had to back off to 600 yards to make it a challenge. Now you say that hitting them at long range is the easy part as well. Well if that's easy too then where's the challenge in for you at all. Are you confused or just making up this stuff as you go? If all you've said is true I think you should just chuck it and take up a real challenge like Taiwanese stick fighting.A god among men like yourself iswasted on a simplistic sport like hunting. :D

how on earth could a man be so stupid about deer hunting if he has in fact hunted for 33 years.
And exactly what about having a sense of ethics about what we do makes someone stupid? Is it because I'm not too cheap to buy some paper targets instead of using live deer when I wanna do some long distance shooting, that makes me stupid? Perhaps it's because I don't take longer than necessary shots at game animals just so I can brag about the distant shots that went well (and never mention the ones that don't) that makes me stupid. If so, I guess I'd rather bestupid than cheap, unethical, a braggartand blinded by delusions of grandeur. To me dumb is taking a 600 yard shot at a big buck when you could easily (according to you) take a much closer one. Can't think of anyone I know that would do that on purpose. Thank god.

Most people do not take shooting benches into the field for hunting...do not agree with that at all!

Maybe with all of your money you can also dupe mother nature and control the elementsmbetween you and your target 1/2 mile out there. All I can say in conclusion is.

WOW now thats far. 890yds. Just wondering did I see the bullet as it was travelling towards thesecond deer?. Must have been a tracer? Now that I dont agree with.
no that wasn't a tracer. its the vapor trail created by the bullet. this shows that the weather was cool and of a high humidity. as the bullet travels through the air it rapidly condenses the water vapor making it possible to watch the path of the bullet especially at long ranges.

personally i think if you have the ability hunt in this way and put deer down cleanly i don't see a problem. i do have a problem with people who put down this type of hunting. some may say that its unethical or they're bad hunters because they "can't" get any closer. hunting at this range is just as hard as hunting within 100 yards of your deer. except they require different skills. within 100 yards you must take into account wind and gettingto your spot without leavingscent and such but the shooting ability doesn't necessarilly have to be all that high.at such a close range assuming your weapon is sighted in putting a deer down should be easy. atsuch a long distance you must be more disciplined in other aspects. you have to be much more of a marksmen to shoot atdistances such as this. some may think this is merely target shooting but to these people its hunting. furthermore i doubt most people have tried this type of hunting so it goes back to don't knock 'til you try it.

now let my flaming begin...
I agree, it is some thing to be proud of to shoot a deer at long range and be good at it. just becuase they use a weapon with 10,000 X the range of a bow doesnt make it any less hunting.
I personally is okay with it provideing they are some one who accually practices shooting at that range and is proficient at it and they do not tresspass on others land.
I only wish i knew how to be a proficient 500+ yard shot myself.

but the mental high I get in those couple seconds are why I hunt this way
Then hell have someone roll some tires down a hill for you 600 yards away. Have them do it without warning so you will never know when to expect it. Then see if you can hit them. Because it sounds like to me the deer has nothing to do with what thrills you about shooting in this way. How could it? At 600 yards you would be hard pressed to gauge much about the quality of the deer.

far as I'm concerned I don't pay much attention to ignorance.
Or shy away from exhibiting it either.

OH and when I do mess up a shot I won't be affraid to say so,
I'm surethat missingwill never be a problem to a superhero like yourself.

I obey the laws as outlined by my local government.
There's a lot of things that arelegalbutnotvery ethical. I could catch a limit of bass every day, come home and toss them in the trash. No law says I have to clean, cook and eat them but I would still consider that being a pretty poor sportsman. Wouldn't you? Well, on second thought, maybe you wouldn't but most folks would.

OH and cheap? do you realize how much money I've allready spent to prepare myself and my equipment for what I do
And yet you skimp on paper targets, some tape and a few old worn out tires that could provide an even greater challenge. For shame.

RR ,get em.:D:D:D lol
I think someone has a crush on somebody. Oh well just seeing you two find one another could make this whole nasty thread worth while.

WOW!! I started to actually read through all 17 pages of posts, then decided to scan through them. I am a little disturbed, to say the least. I don't want to step on any toes or make enemies, seeing as how this is my first post ever here. I heard that this was a great forum and wanted to join.
First of all, who is to say what is ethical for each and every hunter?? I am a new hunter myself, but I don't recall being "taught" or learning that there was a distance cutoff for hunting. I thought that a particular hunter's skill level is what determined what was ethical for them.
I have simultaneously shot under 6 inches at a target 1000 yards away- does this make me just lucky? Just in December I shot and killed a hog at over 400 yards. Does this make me an unethical person?
I'm not sitting here saying that everyone should or needs to "shoot" or "hunt" long distances, but if they feel comfortable with it and can do it successfully, why not? No one can say that there are no misses on short range shots either!! Now that would be a load of BS!
Being a "girl," I can see that there is a lot of chest beating going on here. What's wrong with just congratulating a guy who did something that not alot of people can do?
To each his own is right. Everyone hunts or "shoots" in their own special way. I hunt short and long ranges- just depends on where I'm at.
