Rookie Scores !!!
Finally, after two months of trying, I have meat in the freezer.
Well this being my rookie season of deer hunting I was about to think it just wasn't going to happen. I had been going bowhunting 2-3 times a week for the past 6 weeks and barley seen anything. Nothing within range. Then shotgun season opened on the 16th. I seen a few that weekend but none close enough that I felt comfortable taking a shot on. Having never taken a deer I wanted something preferable within 75 yards.
So I go out again on Saturday the 23rd and after sitting there for about 2 hours and not seeing anything I thought I would get down for awhile and go get warm. Just about that time I see a doe coming through the woods. So I get ready, she is probaly 80 yards away but then turns and goes deeper into the woods. So I sit there for a few minutes longer and here she comes again. So I bring my gun up in hopes that she keeps coming. She did and then at about 40-45 yards she stops and starts eating. Finally she turns broadside. I am shaking from the cold, holding the gun up and the anticipation. All the while I am aiming and telling myself just behind the shoulder and aim a little low. Finally I think to myself, now or never. So I squeeze the trigger, I see her jump straight up and bolt like greased lightning. So after a bit I climb down and go to where I think she was and I see nothing. I am thinking, damn I missed her. So I keep looking and finally about 15 yards in the direction she bolted I spotted some blood. Well needless to say when I saw that blood mine got to pumping. The farther I trailed the blood the more there was. Finally I found her about 75 yards up under a tree. Success. I owe a lot of it to the people on this board for plenty of information.
I know it ain't a buck but it is a trophy for me.
Thanks,

RE: Rookie Scores !!!
Congrats! Last year was my first season and I didn't get a deer. But one hour into this years season, I got a small 8 pointer for my first. They say the first one is always the toughest...
Good luck in the many seasons to come!

First of all congrats on your deer and knowing (maybe more importantly) sticking with your comfortable range and waiting for the shot that would lead you to success. Very good indeed.
Yes, this first is the hardest btw. Only b/c you are completely hooked now. Aren't you?
Here's to another hooked on hunter for life and many more happy days afield<img src=icon_smile_cool.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_approve.gif border=0 align=middle>.
