Let me cut to the chase...here's where we differ:
I think it is totally irresponsible to shoot at a deer with a gun that has never been shot before. You call it a mistake. You fail to understand (or admit) it violated one of the cardinal rules of hunting.
Let me repeat that: It violated one of the cardinal rules of hunting!
You seem to be more concerned aboutdefending your positionand not acknowledging this.
That's it in a nutshell. If that gives you the impression Iam high and mighty....so be it!
Hopefully, others can learn from this.

Sjsfire,
It will do someone some good. But what did this post offer before it was questioned? You don’t think they should have been called irresponsible or ignorant. I’d like to hear what words you would choose to describe what took place. Funny how you state that you can send private messages, but chose to post publicly yourself. But I’m sure there is good reason. You probably felt strongly in you opinion and wanted to share with others, which is how I felt also. But thanks for pointing out the private messaging options.
Well, I could have very well thought the same thing you did when I read that a gun was taken into the field to hunt and not practiced with. But, I choose not to call them those kind of things publicly. I work all day long with people that sometimes surprise me the way they think, do things, etc. But I would never even think about calling them ignorant. I certainly seen your point but it's not my nature to respond in that manner. But to each his own. In my opinion this thread should be buried and put to rest. I think everyone has let their feelings be known.

You know what? Aside from all the snooty attitude I pick up from the primate,Im getting to like him more and more.I apreciate the fact that he wont take a shot he isnt sure of.Ive missed shots that i was sure of,and i find myself shooting at fewer deer all the time, waiting for a better shot.
I still say tree hunting is more than sitting in a tree waiting, but if he has better results still hunting,Im not going to thumb my nose at him.As long as hes not driving deer with a crew of guys.
Mabe the only thing the old boy needs to learn is some tact so his comments arent recieved the wrong way and people actually listen to what he is saying.
Just my opinion, putit in your pocket and take it with you or throw it in the garbage on the way out the door.

WOW. All I can say is read before you post.
How many times have I stated I was in the wrong.
And I know a mistake like that will not happen again.
But I will let you know when I make another so some of you can have some more fun.
KP. You have valid points and others. Why keep diggin it deeper then what it really is. I made a very poor judgement call. I admitted it alot and so again why keep it going.

I dont know why everyone is getting all upset over this sometimes things get overlooked and people make mistakes. I for one have been there and can't condemn anyone for it.
To answer your question, if thats what your looking for.. I was rifle hunting with my cousin a few years ago when a button buck stepped out about 490 yds away(we had a range finder). his .300 ultra mag dropped it in its tracks. when we got to the deer we couldn't find entrance or exit wounds or any blood whatsoever. upon further investigation he shattered one shoulder on the way in and the bullet lodged in the other shoulder. how there wasn't any blood i still don't understand but thats my 2 cents on the matter
Good luck in the future to you and your wife.

. they took the video back to the editing studio to see where he hit the deer. They slowed it down showing a frame by frame shot, you could see the bullet in the air, HIT the buck around the shoulder and the bullet litterally bounced off the deer and landed in the ground!!!!

ShatoDavis,
You don't find that hard to believe? Bouncing bullets! Okay, I've officially heard it all now, I no longer have a reason to be here or read any more literature, the sky is falling...
I actually missed that one in all the arguing! But, lets not fall for the old trick, you know the "no blood" part of the post being associated with some amazing thing, or a simple miss.
But watch, not that it has been mentioned, a lot of people here are going to claim to have seen this exact thing happen, that is the mind set of many here. To not have had one thing happen in the woods that they them selves have not witnessed. Well they must spend a lot more time in the woods than me, cause I've never seen it. All the deer I shoot fall over dead, and there is a bunch of blood! I mean, I did shoot them, with a high power rifle! But you know, the whole missing thing is so inconceivable...
Merlin,
On page 8 post # 79 you wrote “I’m not going to beat my self up over it”. “Did not expect to get beat up and down by a few people who think they are high and mighty”
That was this morning, right?
Then a little later on page 9 post #84 you write “I realize it was a mistake”
How many times do I have to say it – it wasn’t a mistake, and as long as you keep referring to it as a mistake you are simply not taking responsibility for your actions. I think I already made this clear, but you don’t seem to be getting it. What you should say is “I really don’t care about ethics, I’m selfish and I wanted to impress my wife by taking her into the woods to shoot an animal. I did so with no regard for the animal and or its well-being. I know that 40 yards and one hour isn’t enough time to recover and animal, but hey, I was more interested in doing something else.”
I’m pretty sure that is the case Merlin, so no matter what you say, I’m not going to believe you. So what did you do after your hour of searching? Go eat, watch tv, get laid, work on the car, take a nap, shoot at some more deer? What? Your story just keeps on getting better with all these little details you decide to interject once called on, but I don’t buy it. And neither do others, but yet we (you, me and others) are still fighting about it. Do you know why? Because we cannot define ethics for each other. It is kind of like no one really being able to define “normal” for another being. Your ethics and the people who agree that you simply made a “mistake” do not have the same level of ethics as the people who share my opinion. So who is right? I don’t know, probably neither of us, but I think that maybe following some basic guidelines from and organized hunting group might be a good place to start, like at the minimum, and you did not! And a big thanks to Jimmy S who graciously pointed out “it violates one of the cardinal rules of hunting”! I mean, how can you argue with that, and guess what, you did it on purpose!
All,
Go back and read the original post, and then read my first response. I don’t think it was all that bad really, given what has transpired. But stupidity and deception make me angry. And apparently some of you don’t feel it is my place to question such actions. But I think it is pretty fair to say that I have every right to question any thread that is posted. And I do realize that it goes both ways.
If stupidity were painful there would be a lot less threads like this – just a lot of people sitting at their PC’s yelling “ouch”!
SRBowman,
I’ll tell you what I’m trying to accomplish since you asked. I’m educating the world (as far as anyone in the world being able to read these threads), that not every hunter is this stupid. And oh yeah, ignorant and irresponsible.

Well Primate as far as I am concerned you said one thing right. That your Ideas are yours and mine are mine. Everyone is going to feel theirs is the right one.
So get somthing else better to do other then nit picking my posts trying desperatly to find some error that you can bend and twist to your fancey.
But you are entertaining with all your make believe and fantasy.
Put more into my post then what was posted somemore. I find it funny now. I am actually starting to feel sorry for you.
I did that on purpose? So now you can go back in the past and read my mind at the time I decided to let her toake the gun. **** I don't know what I was thinking. Thats why I said "Mistake" "Poor Judgement"
So why don't you take you ballitics calculator and go roll some tires down a hill and fire away.

What does that mean? Are you saying that I typed text into one of your posts? Forgive me, but your poorly written sentence is hard to understand, but I'm starting to think that you do this on purpose, so that you can be the one to twist it to suit your argument.
And I'll tell you who I feel sorry for - your children! They are being raised by an ignorant man, who can't take responsibility for his actions, what an example to lead with, Mr. leader, and just so you know that is what you are, their leader. You can be a man and at least try to do a good job, or you can continue how you're doing it now. But, before you go and look them in the eyes, you do them a favor. Go look in the mirror and be honest with yourself. Think you can handle that? You ask yourself, out loud, if you are being a good leader. And then answer the question honestly, again, out loud.
I'm pretty sure that the way you act while you hunt is the same way you act through out the rest of your life. And that is irresponsibly. And if I had to pick ten words to describe the leader that your children deserve, "irresponsible" would not be one of them!
Which brings me to my next statement. I have wasted enough time conversing with you. I have not learned one thing from all of this, except maybe (and I’m heavy on the “maybe”) I should be a little more tolerant of people like you (and I am trying to exercise that by not typing the adjectives that come to mind). But I guess it is obvious that I am having a hard time with it.
