I Love The Rut
#1
I have about an acre sized clover patch that gets used heavily. For the past 3 years I see Fawns & Does all year long but never even a single buck. But every season durring the rut I manage to get a nice buck. This was my best yet!
Hunted most of the weekend except for sunday night and didn't see much but yearlings. Sunday night I glanced down into my food plot , about 1/4 mile away, and wouldn't you know it, I could see a buck pushing a couple does. Couldn't tell how big he was, I just caught a glimps of white above his head. Monday morning I was headed down to the food plot a little over an hour before sunup when a deer snorted at me from right under my stand. I didn't want to push the buck, it wasdark, and I was still 100ish yards away,so I slowly backed out of there and in a round about way went about 400 yards up the creek, hoping that would be his rout of choice for the day. About 2 hours later and a couple direct hits from the squirl that was throwing things at me,I was field dressing a 5X6 + drop tine. When I shot I saw he was a shooter, but didn't realize how nice he was. It was a good day!
Visited the new Cabella's in Omaha last week and made a comment to the wife that unless it was a real monster I would never get a deer mounted unless it was a nice one with a drop tine. I have always wanted to get one with a drop, just once in my life. Guess I need to start saving my change.
