RE: how early
Well 2 years ago on the first day of bow season (also first time ever bow hunting) I read the time charts wrong (forgot to account for daylights saving time) and got out to my stand an hour and a half before shooting time. After the first 30 minutes I was kicking myself because it was still dark. Well I got my first deer with a bow that morning, and Im pretty sure getting out that early helped. Ive had deer spook when I got out around shooting time. I think its all about knowing when the deer are going to get where you are going to hunt. Ive run out to a stand 45minutes before the end of shooting time in the evening, and seen plenty of deer and didnt spook them. If you can learn their patterns, that will be the best tell of what time to get out there.

RE: how early
For rifle season I like to get in the stand 30 minutes before legal light which is 1 hour before sunrise. I have noticed that when the quail start whistling it's usuall within a minute or two of legal light.
