RE: homemade deer stands
Hey, not sure if you are talking about portables or permenant stands. We use mostly permenant stands during rifle season. Two sections of scaffolding which gives you a 4x8 platform on top. We build walls to make a 4x4 box and use an old sky light as a roof (just sit it on top) Hinged windows and door. It is kind of like hunting from the living room, but hey you may as well be comfortable! The other 4x4 section that is not enclosed is great for bow hunting.
It seems that portable stands, are just not worth making. You can get a decent ladder stand after the season for about $60.

If you are talking permanent stands we hunt on a private farm and all our stands are miniature cabins. My cabin is 8x8 with insulated walls, sliding windows ,heater, 2 bunk/benchs that fold up agianst the wall and 1 paded swiveling boat seat in the middle. It sounds kind of extreme, but we can camp in it and it's like a mini get away. Might as well be comfortable while enjoying your favorite outdoor activity. The deer don't care about the cabin being there. We put my dads cabin out by the pond and that afternoon he sat out there and had a doe walk right up like nothing was different. My dad my brother and I are disabled and these cabins allow us the oportunity to hunt and we wouldn't have it any other way.

I use a homemade tree stand. I have a picture of it somewhere. I will post when I find it. basically some 2X6 & 2X4 with plywood for a floor. walls are made from smaller trees and branches.
