I use 140gr ballistic tips in my 7mmstw's and 180gr ballistic tips in my 300ultrmags.Game usually drops on the spot and no animal has made it 50 yards after being hit.

30.06. and Core Lokt 180 grainers. They drop where they stand....
Only exception in 13 years of huntingwas last year, even though it was a heart shot....this buck wanted to live a tad bit longer.
He still does though in memory, and on my living room wall.
Its not what you harvest...
Its what you learn...

Christine is right on target. I only use the 180 Remington corelokt for the takeing of elk and deer because they don't break down on impact, and mostly thats what flies the best out of my Remington 30-06. <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

Thanks everyone for your input. I will have to try some of the off the shelf rounds. I don't have a reloader for rifle rounds yet. I sure was disappointed in what I had and I thought a 270 should perform better.

I work at a gun shop and a guy brought us his 300 ultra mag and said that he couldnt make it group and wanted us to develop a good handload.(remington is all that was available for it) Well there wasnt much reloading data at the time for the UM so we took the bullets out of a few factory rounds to get an idea of how much powder they were using. The first 2 rounds that we took apart varied by 4 grains of powder. we took 10 shells apart with as much as 6 grains variance in them. We just average the powder out and put the factory bullet back in and had groups under an inch.
I will never shoot remington ammo again. Only winchester for me.

I have had excellent luck w/ "federal premium" round's with a couple of different guns. for my .270 rifle i use the nosler ballistic tip in 150 grain. i have had great success with this round. its pretty flat shooting, and velocity and footlbs. are great at long distances. for my ruger m77, .308 i shoot federal premium, sierra gameking, st/bt., in a 165 grain round. it doesn't have the velocity of the .270 or the stamina for distance, but its still a good round. since i started using these rounds i have had only one deer travel more than 20yds, and it wasn't the bullets fault.
all in all, the federal premium rounds have worked very well for me.

My 270 weatherby 140 barnes x (over 77.4 grains H1000)handloads. Dad's 270 win. 140 grain ballistic tip handloads. Ballistics tips seemed a little fragile at 100 yards with the extra velocity from my weatherby. I was getting a lot of jacket separation. Since I only use my weatherby for good bucks I want to break bone. Shot buck last week hit the main bone in the shoulder on the way in and broke the other on the way out with the barnes x.

I'm shooting a Ruger #1 in .375 H&H. I am sighted in with 270 gr. Hornadys, and also have 250 gr. Federals with the Trophy Bond Bear Claws. I figure the deer can't be too dead, and I will probably get a good blood trail if somehow it moves after getting hit.
