What's the best non-motorized way of dragging a deer out of the woods?
Grab the deer and start hoofing it to the truck. I actually enjoy the grueling drag by hand. It kind of goes along with the whole experience.

we use a sled usually or grab the legs, depending on if we have a sled or not. one year we started up the muddiest hill you could imagine with a deer and a sled pullin it, two guys. we coulnt move, we had to go back up to the road, get a bunch of rope, tie it to the sled with the deer, wrap the deer in a tarp to keep the mud off and use the truck on the road to pull it up. that was some serious fun there.... NOT!

I tie on my deer drag and start leaning forward. I pick out a spot (like a certain tree) and try to drag it to that spot without stopping for a break. Might only go 75 to 100 yards. Take a knee for a minute or so and do it again.

I just use a cheap deer drag rope with handle I picked up at the hunting store. Either loop it round a buck's antlers or round a does neck.

I use a spin-off of the plastic sled; it's called a "Deer Sleigher". I got it through Cabela's years ago. It's a piece of heavyweight plastic that you can roll up and carry in a backpack or packframe. It has holes in the sides to "lace" the deer in place, and a grometted hole in the front that you put the drag rope through and around the deer's head. When you start pulling, the front curls up just like a toboggan. I also insert my UNLOADED rifle under the laced up deer so I don't have to carry it (also any extra outer clothing I don't want to wear).
I thought about the plastic sled, but didn't want to be walking around carrying a sled all day.
This thing works really well, even on dry ground. On snow, you hardly even know you're pulling anything. Only thing is, you have to get used to hunting with a pack on your back.

I'm with dayna0306, haven't dragged a deer out in five years. I quarter them and backpack them out. Dragging is for the rare deer I kill within a few hundred yards of a road.

i just carry some rope make a loop around the neck find me a good stick wrap the rope around that 2 give me a handle put it behind my back and start the haul. It's all part of the hunt to me. The drag is tiring but i find it enjoyable.
