"I'm sorry, BUT I highly doubt this very statement. It is rare for domestic animals to be "witnessed" being killed, let alone this many wild aniamls by one person. I say, there is a lot of "hearsay" being talked around here!!" -Howler
Howler,
I am referring to an 87 year old man who made his living as a sheep rancher in western CO. He has seen coyotes kill everything I mentioned, unless he is lying, which I would seriously doubt. He hates coyotes so much because of how much they cost him over his lifethat he has a hangin' tree for them. When he kills one he hangs it from the tree, and many times I have seen it with a number of coyotes hanging from it. I realize that you are probably the foremost expert on what aman who lived in the fields for 75 years has or has not seen in his life, but just because you don't think something is true doesn't make it so. If you would like to talk to him yourself about coyotes I would be happy to put you too in touch, but I don't think he would like you calling him a liar and niether do I. Like I said he is a close family friend. I don't treat this forum as a place to lie and tell fictional tales, so please don't think I am lying when I post something here.

Latest reading on coyotes is they can actually help your turkey Pop. Racoons are turkeys number 1 enemy and yotes do more to the coons than they do to the turkeys. I've seen yotes go after many a turkey unsuccessfully but only have found the odd kill site. Lots of coons been had so I have no issue with them.
Rising deer numbers and rapidly rising yote numbers in my area so they sure don't seem to effect deer pops.
The number one issue is house cats running loose. That in itself is enough for me to be gald we have them
I'd rather the odd coyote in the bush than Mrs. Jones cat pi$$ing in my garden and walking across my car with muddy feet.

I agree that house cats and dogs kill alot of game, but for someone to think they kill more game than coyotes doesn't make sense.
Yotes are much more dispersed than feral or family pets.
Yotes kill to eat. They kill out ofnecessity. Pets don't kill out of necessity. A coyote has to kill to feed its young. Does your family dog?
I know here in PA there aren't rabbits and pheasantslike there useto be. So what are all those PA coyotes eating?
Yeah, they eat mice but they will eat fawns too, as well as adult deer.
For the guys who don't mind having the yotes around, its too bad we can't relocate our coyotes to your hunting grounds.
For someone to claim, that cats and dogs kill more game than coyotes is crazy. All coyotes have to kill to surive and alot of the time, what they kill, is a game animal.
Wild pets can and do kill game but not at the rate coyotes do.
Insome placesthereare a variety of other animals a coyote can kill and eat and many of them are easier to catch and kill than a deer. They can go after quail, rabbits, armadillas, javilina, feral hog piglets, and other animals. That may be why they don't put such a dent in the deer numbers as bad as they do other places. some places all there is, is deer and mice. Like here in PA.
I'd like to see you guys book a hunt on a Texas ranch and tell the owner and guides, that you feel the coyotes should be left alone, because they won't hurt the deer population. What do you think they would say?

huntingson, the part I really have a hard time beleiveing is that your friend witnessed coyotes kill a rocky mountain sheep, beings as where the rocky moutain sheep lives, very few coyotes go! So for your freind to say he witnessed coyotes kill a rocky mountain sheep is very hard to swallow. Now mountian lion, I could believe, but not coyotes!!
I'm not calling you or your friend a liar, stranger things have happened. BUT it seems very highly unlikely that coyotes would ever even attempt trying to kill a sheep, beings as where sheep live, coyotes rarely venture!
I hunt coyotes more in the winter than any other critter. With ranchers it seems they either love them or hate them. I've had ranchers deny me access for the simple reason that they beleive the coyotes do them more good in controling rodents in thier hay fields than they do around thier life stock. And, there are some ranchers that want them all shot, and hung on the fence to "deter other coyotes from hanging around", which doesn't work, but hey, I'll hang'em as requested. BUT I'm stillwaiting for someone to tell us that the area they hunt hasa lesser amount of available deer tags do to coyote depredation!! And as was said, raccoon and skunk will do more harm to turkeys than coyotes will, by eating the eggs from a nest, and let's not forget about bobcats, whocan be hard on turkey populations too!

My in-laws lease a farm in Maryland. They've been hunting here for at least 10 years. They mostly hunt bucks but will take does on occassion. They are the only ones that hunt that farm, so it is not over hunted.
In the last couple of years they have been noticing fewer and fewer deer and more and more coyotes. They usually see a few coyotes each time they go.
They have also noticed, that the does they see, arewithout fawns. They have seen as many as 7 coyotes running together. Probably a family group.
My brother-in-law was archery hunting last year and watched as a lone doe came past his stand. As he was watching the doe, he heard leaves rustling behind him. Since the rut was on, he prepared for maybe a shot at a buck. Suddenly the doe took off running as a coyote came running after it, from behind him.
This farm is not overhunted as they only take 3 or 4 deer off of it a year and almost all are bucks.
They scout in the winter and see few deer tracks but coyote tracks are everywhere.
I believe that the reason they don't see as many deer is because of coyotes. i also believe the reason the does don't have fawns with them is because the yotes are getting them.

Garrett county, I believe. For some reason, they don't invite me to hunt, LOL.They aren't real serious hunters. They hunt the first day of each season, buck, archery, muzzle loader, and a few other days here and there.
I told them they should go down there and shoot off a few of those yotes. They won't shoot them during deer season when they see them, "Because they don't want ruin a chance at a buck" I keep suggesting they go after the season and try to call a few in, they don't.
I'd be hunting a lot more than the few days they go.I guess that's why they don't want me there. LOL
