I believe deer do make the sound you are describing. I have heard deer make a yelping sound amost like a high pitched dog bark. My brother walked up on a deer early one morning at his feeder. He said it made a sound he had never heard from a deer before, and that he would not have believed it was a deer if he had not seen it. He said it sounded just like a bird screeching, kind of like a blue heron.(I think I have the right bird) Maybe this is the same noise you are decribing.

We are learning more and more about deer and their behavior everyday. Let's not be so quick to pass judgement on what someone thinks they heard. Maybe even someone that has been hunting for years can learn something new.

Sounds like a younger deer to me but I have heard awful screams from owls too. All you southern boys settle down, he will figure out the noise.

Sounds like you had a deer blow at you, but it isn't a screech.

Burnies on a roll !and you know thinking back i think i have heard a screech when they lock up them brakes!
And let me clarify i have nothing against texas !!! my best four hunters in my club are from south of dallas!! i couldnt find any better!
they were tired of paying high inflated prices to lease in texas and get a lease and no deer on the tracts. they said texas is overblown on the deer issue. yeah the areas that have water have deer ,no water no deer! and the price to lease WOW!!
i would love to hunt some of the areas with water in texas.
WThunter i am only sour sometimes! where is your mother from in the land that klintoon WAS from? (note:WAS!)

Skeeter i forgot all about rabbits. they will scream like a woman( sorry to all the famales )when caught. i have watched hawks try to catch them in our pasture.i just recently cut a large portion of my pastures and the rabbits probably are not to happy with me .i was cutting and could see those little cotton tails trying to find new places to hide. i kind of felt bad but i couldnt see through that stuff. deer love those fresh cut pastures late in the evening.
and really throwing spears at me. i would have not have expected that from my canadian cyber friend.
And lastly skeeter being that i have never even seen a moose in life i can't say anything relevant about them. i did watch a show that some girl was walking around with fake moose antlers and the dumb things would come in slobbering and pantings thinking it was a moose. they couldnt see the human for looking only at the antlers.
i wish whitetails would do that . anyway maybe i will get a chance to hunt a moose sometime.

Rodsmith, they sure can scare the scat out of you! They are really amazing animals, one thinks they look big, dumb, clumsy and so on, but they are anything but dumb and a can be really sneaking. You want scared, try calling in a bad boy looking for a fight/love and having the diamond willows feet from you litterly shaking, cause he is work it it so hard....then couple that with a Bow and Arrow. (well maybe not scared but really nerve racking, pardon the pun).

Oh great i brought up the bow again, sorry soarkrebel.

Oh here's a gun story, 7 years ago a buddy and I were calling a large swamp with the populars and diamond willows all over. We had this bull going nuts, but he remained on the outside, finally after 3 hours of moving and calling he committed to our demands. He stopped several times, to rub and grunt, working perfectly than shut up. I kept grunting him while my buddy would cow call, indicating a hot cow and a tending bull. Then we heard directly behind us the sounds of uff and smash. Turned to see this bull, all snotty, hair standing up on end, pissing all over himself with small trees hanging from his antlers. I crapped my one piece, he started to bare down looking for the challenger and we shot 6 times, he dropped 20 yards directly in front of us. We both promptly relieved our smells and decided a high five might be in order. Doesn't that sound fun!!!!!

Soarkrebel, see above you posted while I was on the dumb things some call moose. yes during the rut is the only time a moose gets caught with his tallywacker in his hand or hoof. But you know whitetails do as well, why do you think everyone loves the rut? It is that one equalization factor that just maybe levels the playing field. Same hold true for moose or elk. You know many think Mulies are the dumbest creatures on earth, yet a trophy buck(talkin 190 range B&C) is pretty darn smart and hey up here we don't get the luxury to ever hunt them during the rut as it happens well after the season closes. I have respect for all the animals I hunt and know on any given day they can/will & have out smarted me/us the smart one>>>>HUH!

Now this obviously has nothing to do with your post, sorry.

U R right about the price of hunting in Texas!! It is hard to find land to hunt without money unless you know someone that has land. However one can buy a public land permit for $40 a year to hunt millions of acres in Texas. I hunt the National Forest in east Texas and manage to see deer almost every time I go to the woods.

There are some huge deer taken each year on public land.

Mom is from the rice/cotton fields near Hamburg. Lots of deer and birds there.

Soarkrebel, I didn't see the spears thing. Hey man I should have said ribbing you...so sorry. I am on your side with the bow stuff, I do like to bow hunt....but I JUST LOVE TO HUNT PERIOD.....

You have fun with your fresh cut you hear and let us know how you make out. Camp Kumbaya is happening Nov 12-20th this year, I will be sure to post the results. Should be a good one, everyone except me is toting doe tags ( I already tagged my doe in Oct....need to be focused on my monsta) so da blood and hair should be in the bed of the truck, knife, hands, suits and cabin for sure.

hey do you ever use scents? If so read my post on Wildlife Reserach scents and reply....I need some info and experience. Even if you know of someone...I am the oh natural boy in camp, so I though maybe what the hay.

Best of Luck.
