RE: What approach would you take?
1) Early in the season, when the weather's still warm, the deer will need water more often during daylight hours, so set up "cross wind" of the pond. Most likely, the bucks will always approach the pond from "down wind". Don't set up "up wind" or "down wind" b/c your sent will keep them away.
2) During the rut, find the does. If you can find the does, you'll find the bucks too.
3) When the weather gets cold, hunt food sources.
4) If you still don't have them going into the last couple days of the season, do a drive, starting mid-morning, through the bedding area. The drivers should zig-zag, making as much noise as possible, shaking limbs, barking, etc and approach the area from the up-wind. You need to set up down wind with your rifle. Also, if you have radios, use them. That way, if they jump one, they can tell you.
