Default scouting!!

Im currently scouting for the 2006 whitetail deer season in NY.And i recently found a new hunting location with great potential.Ive been down there quite a bit and i always see deer, but they have already shed so i cant tell if there bucks or does. But some of them are massive deer.Heres a list of positives and negetives about this location:

POSITIVES:

1.Deer sign all over the place.Tracks,Scrapes, beds, and hair everywhere!
2.Big location.2 nice size fields and woodsand plenty of cover.
3.Great vegetation and enviroment.Big stream, good vegetation and cover.
4.Great stand sites
5.Deer are everywhere

NEGETIVES:

1.few rubs on trees
2.near a road

I personally think this is a great place to do some hunting. But i would love to here your opinion. So please post and tell me if you think this would be a good place to hunt.

Thanks,

Good place to hunt. I have shot 3 P & Y deer < 300 yards from the road in the last three seasons. Take anything that you can get. Especially with all the sign you are seeing. The bucks will move through during the rut for sure.

I agree with GregH. Sounds like a great place to hunt. If not, then it has very good potential.

You'd be surprised at what hangs out near roads!
I had a lease a few years ago, that we put a stand up on a high-line right-of-way at the last minute before deer season. the highline paralleled a highway. There was a strip of woods, about 300 yards long, and only about 150 yards (at most) between the highline and the highway. I have never seen so many good bucks in one area! I guess that they felt safe, with all the hunters going deeper into the woods!

i wouldn't worry too much about the lack of buck sign within the area. as long as you see some buck sign, then you know there are bucks in the area. plus, where there's doe's...there's gonna be bucks during the rut. sounds to me as if you got a good spot.

I hunt in Ill. and up Nort. I used to hunt Racine for about 25 years, then my spots got developed. When I first hunted Racine, there weren't any deer around. Towards the end, they were everywhere, I took over 20 deer out of Racine 5 big ones, 3 made P & Y. I still live in Racine, the Nort side.

Sounds like a great start. I must agreeabout the roads too. I have seen some of my best deer and have some productive stands close to roads. Can you plant food plots and cut trees? It never hurts to maximize the habitat.

Good luck.
