Default How did that deer get soooo close to me?

Last week I went to my buddy's house for a party and of course it wasn't long before we started talkin' deer hunting.

Of all the comments made, the most popular was that fact that all of us had been in the position of finally seeing a deer and a lot of timesthe deer wasso very close.

It made us wonder...how did he get that close without us realizing it.
It always amazes me. Kinda makes me wonder what I could have done differently.

Has this ever happened to you, and if so, what did you think?

honestly jimmy, All the deer I have shot except (2) have been deer that I have seen comingnot heard coming. Some deer I have seen from far away and shot them but some have been mysteriously close as well. And In every Time,I can remember scanning the whole landscape around me and seeing nothing; only to look up 2 or 3 seconds later and the deer is standing there like its been there 20 minutes.... I dont know how this happens but I will agree deer move like smoke though the woods..... Its awsome to actually see a deer just appear in the woods...especially when its close to you...

All the deer I have shot were close - within 20 yards or so. I have found it is all a matter of finding out where the deer like to go, gettig a spot close by, and staying STILL. Couple years ago I had set up beside a large clump of trees just before sunrise. Lite wind blowing with occassional gusts. With the tracks we had scouted I figured on seeing deer at any time. Well I didn't. A gust of wind breaks an old dead branch and it falls, twisting somehow to miss me and hitting the ground about 3 inches from me. I had to step out from the tree (to check my drawers), I turned and not 15 yards - downwind - were 3 of 'em. I was flat busted and not ready. After lunch, I set up by the same set of trees and not 15 minutes later here comes a nice doe wandering up - MEAT ON THE TABLE.

This year I had a different place but similar setup - snow on the ground. Tracks indicated a deer highway 25 yards from my spot. Right at sunup, they come up behind me - cutting a new trail. Holy Crap! I was stuck, couldn't move or reposition in order to get a shot and they kept hanging around behind me. Could get my head turned far enough to see them but would have to step out from the tree to turn my body around and get the gun up. I got lucky in that after a few, another deer came in from the other direction. That ones in the freezer.

We're in their house. they know it better than we ever will. They blend in so well into their environment its jsut amazing. I have seen a couple deer that poof were directly infront of me and we were all inside 15 yards. Amazing!!! I have no idea where they came from.

Last season while bowhunting ,I had a young 4point buck walk right to me on a trail .I seen him about 50yrds off ,I froze and just watched him walk up to me within 5 feet ,and I'm sure he would have walked right on up to me if I hadn't let him know I was standing right in front of him .The wind was in my favour and I had just finished applying my cover scent's .Cover scent's work great and this situation just prove's it to me .
