Dont fall asleep!
#23
I have done it before. In fact thefirst year I went shotgun hunting I was sitting on the ground next to my dad. It was about 4 in the afternoon and we hadn't seen a deer in 2 days. I started to snooze off and my dad said i slept for about 10 minutes before he nudged me and wokeme up. I wasn't awake for a minute when I looked to my left and saw an old doe standing not 10 yards away. 1 shot from an 870 and I had my first deer.
This was about 7 years ago and I try not to fall asleep since. I've never done it while sitting in a treestand since I keep thinking that I'm 12 feet and well thats a long fall.

I nod off almost every time I hunt. These "naps" are short lived but they still occur. This is mainly because I hunt dark to dark on most hunts and it does take a toll. I love it!

Deer are very curious creatures. About 5 years ago, I got in my stand about 45 minutes before sunrise on opening day. I did not get much sleep the night before, because to me opening day is a lot like Christmas Eve.
About 7:30 I woke up not even knowing I had dozed off. I awoke to a big doe staring straight at me about 10 yards away. I don't care how cool you are. When you wake up to a deer staring straight at you, you are not going to awake in smooth fashion. She immediately made a short run then stopped and snort wheezed and 2 more deer ran off about 30 yards in front of me.
I am sure I was snoring, and I was in full camo in the tree. I think she was just trying to fugure out what I was.
My goal every year is to get a good night sleep the night before opening day. I am better at it but I still go through severe drowsy spells in the woods.

I have hunted about four times a week, either morning or afternoon. My ladder stand and taranchula seat cushion, no way I could fall asleep.
So......What is the best treestand to catch them 40 winks in?
Then I suppose this might look familiar.....
Ha!

Once in our fall turkey season I went out on a warm afternoon and found an uprooted tree where the roots kind of formed a perfect lounge chair. I leaned back and was out rather quickly. When I woke up there were three bucks surrounding me within 10 yards and two of em were wall hangers! My best guess is that I snored them in. I have been known to snore quite loudly at camp and cant imagine that I wasnt snoring then. My gut feeling is that they mistook it for a buck grunting.
