I don't see how it matters. I understand both. It's like 6 in one hand and a half dozen in the other.

So, if you get a nice buck with a combinationof 8pts., 4 on each side, do you refer to it as a 4x4 or an 8pt. I grew up refering to deer as a total combination. Doesn't Boone & Crockett do the same? What do you refer to them as? Some say it depends on your geography.

Here in Ontario it's an 8 point. Yet to here anyone around here say a 4x4. Even if the rack is a 4X5 it still doesn't accuratly describe the rack to nobody really bothers.

In the majority of the Northeast a whitetail isusually refered to by its total number of points.

Refering to an animal as a 4x4 or similar usually suggests you are discussing a mulie or an elk, basically any game taken in the south or west.

in florida, a 4x4 is your family vehicle. we address the harvest by the total number of points. a point being atlest 1 inch in length.

Here, an 8 point is an 8 point. A 10 point is the goal for many, and if somebody shot a12 point this debate would become mute. If somebody shot a really messy non-typical some wise guy might call it an 11x17, but it would be followed by a sarcastic snicker.

The metric system didn't catch on down here either.

Of course we are strictly talkingwhitetail deer.

I guess it depends where your from. I have a lot of hunting buddies down south in fla and some in N.C. as well as washington state. Some of my friends in washington don't count the brow tines. Some of my other friends in fla will count anything you can hang a ring from and call them by the number of all the points onboth side.
When I talk to people , I say its a 5x5, or an 8x5 (wishing) and let them do the math, regardless if a whitetail or a mulie. By doing that, most people now what I'm talking about.
