finally got one
At 830 on wednesday i finally got a deer after 5 years of nothing. I have a few questions. This deer i thought was a doe end up being a button buck. I had three deer right under me. When they were coming in two of them were head buting fighting like bucks. Never seen that before. When i shot the deer it did not jump or anything. I saw where it ran didnt hear any crashing. I thought I missed something told me to go over there and look well i found about 200 yards away. I feel so bad that I got a button buck. I so thought it was a doe. I killed off something that could have been a nice buck next year.

Yeah, but don't beat yourself up about it. It is just so hard to tell. The butting of the heads could have been an indicator though....[8D]
Um, some things to look for. Bucks are generally more curious than does, so they will sometimes come closer to investigate. Also, if there are several yearling deer in a group, the does will be smaller. For us meat hunters, that's bad news for a button buck. Before I learned that info, I would shoot the button every time.
Unless they are really close, and you can see the knobs, rely on binocs, and just do what you can do.
