Do you take a chew in the woods? Experiences?
Being a fairly new hunter and not knowing everything, I have been chewing Kodiak Wintergreen while hunting the last 2 years. Once in a stand and once on the ground. Bad habit, but nothing like a good chew when hunting. Both instances I have had a lot(doe and small bucks) of deer come right by my stand. I have been reading some previous messages on this, but it did not seem to have an effect on them in my case. Now knowing what I know, this is dumb to take the chance, but I still had deer by me. Either the wind was right, or they did not notice because it is wintergreen. I dont know if I will take the chance though this year, but it will be hard because I chew all the time. Any experiences while chewing in the woods? Did anyone see deer while chewing?

I have a friend that chews the Cherry Skoal, and he kept spitting it down on the ground. We watched three doe come right up and sniff it then looked straight up in the tree and busted him. The funny part is I have the whole thing on video tape from 30 yards away sitting in another tree. We get the tape out every year at camp and play it over and over. Now he "spits" in a plastic soda bottle with a lid on it!

Oh yeah I like that Kodiak too, its a habit that I need to quit soon. I chew somtimes while on stand but I dont spit on the ground. I usually take a plastic Pepsi bottle to use that I can put the cap back on. I have seen deer while chewing, so it has not seem to make much difference.

I chew Skoal Longcut Straight and spit right off my stand and never had a deer spook from it.It can be a pain in the butt though while I'm wearing my facemask.

What the hell are you doin chewin. Its nasty and disgusting and gross, and to be honest, I miss a chew. I use to dip Hawkens and then needed more flavor and went to beechnut wintergreen chewing tobaca, a two pack a day habit that I would take to my treestand. I have had deer standing at the base of my stand where I was spit'n and once I was playin and spit on a Does back. Chewin did cost me a shot at a 4x4 as I had my tobacco pouch in my top pocket and as I made a bow shot my string grabbed it in my top pocket and the arrow did a funny thing. True story. Good luck this year, Bobby

Here's the deal as far as I am concerned. Have I spooked deer because of it....probably. Have I killed deer in spite of it...absolutely, three days ago as a matter of fact. bottom line is I am out there to have fun, and spendin 4 hours in a tree without some fresh cope is out of the question.

I totally agree! I chew Skoal Mint and spit right out of my tree. I say the same thing, hunting to me is therapeutic and relaxing, as soon as it becomes more work than play I will stop. Maybe I have scared deer, but I do know that I have shot deer as well and if some of those old timers who still smoke in stand can get a deer than I know I sure damn well can!
One thing, I have most of my stands in pine trees and I think maybe the needles at the base of the tree might mask the odor a little bit. I do know that spitting on pine needles from 25-30 ft is a lot quieter than spitting on dry oak leafs!
