the first 30 is the caliber size , and the 2nd 30 is because back in the day when it was produced 30 grains of smokeless powder was used..hence 30.30

ORIGINAL: SyPTo

actually the M1903 (rifle)that used the 30 caliber bullets used 30-03 (30-45) in 1903 the rifle underwent some revisions in 1904/1905 and in 1906 it was revised to specificly fit the new 30-06 cardridge.
And before that was the .30-40 Krag. There many original .30-40 Krags in Cuba
today. Many were passed down from thier grandfathers of the Spanish/American
war.

Not dumb questions at all. I didn't know any of that either and was always kind of curious.

Actaully. The '06 was not named for the year in which it was invented, but for the year in wgich it was ADOPTED by the military. But I believe it was developed in '06 AND adopted in '06 which is uncommon. It was developed )AS SYPTO SAID) beecause the original 30-03 was woefully underpowered when compared to the mauser cartridge (7x57 I believe) The 03's roudnose bullet just didn't have the oomph. So a new cupro jacketed spitzer bullet was developed adn adopted in .06. Keep in mind that development and naming of UScartridges and USweapons were often separate.
The Springfield 1903 and it '06 cartridge were (and remain) basicly a copy of the mauser rifles of that era. In fact, the springfield armory had to pay the Mauser brothers a royalty or liscencing fee because the stripper clip was and exact copy.
Still, I like the springfield alot better. MAkes a better target gun and although not as durable as a 98 mauser (Sprinfields do have a 2 piece firing pin) it still makes a great hunting rifle. And the '06 is about as perfect a round as you can get, when you consider price, availabilty, reloading data, performance, and just plain tradition.
Sorry don't mean to lecture.
