Sighting in
Seems most ppl sight in about 2" high at 100 yds. in order to still hit the boiler room on big game at further distances. For my Rem. 700 in 30-06, I guess most would recommend 2" high right? This rifle will be used primarily for VA whitetails.

That is not a good rule of thumb. I would sight your gun in, with the ammo you hunt with, dead on at 100 yards. From there experiment with your gun at different ranges and make any changes accordingly.

I sight my 300 Wby in 2" high at 100 yds and was able to center hit within 2" (low) of where I aimed at a deer at 297 yds last year. I agree it isn't a good rule of thumb, though, and it's better to get on a longer rifle range, with your ballistic tables for your ammo, and figure out what you want to do.

Yow.... You guys and your high powered rifles... dropping a deer in its tracks from 3/4 of mile away...
I have my trusty 30-30 sighted in to be a 1/2" high at 50 yards and call it good. Then again, I limit myself to 100-125 yards at best.

Your zero should be set for your situation, not what others say or need. If you expect 250-300 yard shot then sure site in 2" high at 100, however if 200 or under are what you expect 1" high would work well. Pick your zero based on your hunt and what distances you expect will present themselves within your own ability.
Always shoot your loadto verify your POI at those distances don't use paper ballistics or what somebody else says will happen.

RE: Sighting in
For quick sight-in, set it dead on or 1" high @ 25 yds. On most calibers you will be good out to 200-250 yds. When you have more time after that see what it looks like at 100 and 200 yds. and make the proper adjustments if needed. I just put a new scope on my 30-06 and have not done the 100-200 sight in yet but with the other scopes I've had on it, I didn't have to change anything at the longer yardages.
