Exit wounds are going to be relative to the type of bullet you use, the velocity at which the bullet passes through the animal, and what the bullet strikes while passing through the body. Take broadside shots right behind the shoulders through the ribs so you take out both lungs and don't waste meat. Define loud. All centerfire rifles I have shot are loud enough to be uncomfortable to the unprotected ear while shooting targets, however, I have never heard a shot I have fired at a deer.

The 7MM-08 is a really good "all-around" deer cartridge! It is flat shooting, and has mild recoil too.
As frizzellr said, all centerfire guns are loud, and the exit wound is relative to the bullet style that you are using. Larger bullets don't always mean large exit wounds. Use a good bullet style such as a "core-loct" and you will have the right size exit hole that you will need to have when tracking a deer. Good luck!

I shoot a 7mm-08. Love it. Can I ask why you want a small exit wound? Is it because you don't want to lose any meat? Just wondering... As far as i know, bigger exit wound...better blood trail. But, it does depend on the bullet. And as far as noise... they all sound the same to me at the range...LOUD. lol... In the woods, it doesn't affect your hearing your so concentrated on the deer with buck fever.
Quick Question for anyone willing to answer: How much more does a 7mmMag kick compared to the 7mm 08. Thanks!

7mm-08 is great for what you specified . If you want smaller exit wounds use harder bullets like nosler or barnes and you should be fine .Always wear ear protection on the range regardless what you shoot . What shooting you do for game should be no problem . Just remember shot placement is the key ,practice all you can .

I use a 243 win. You have alot of distance if needed? and very controlled damage-enterance and exit. Flat tragectory, I have never tracked a deer more than about 70 yards using this rifle.

If the farthest shot is gonna be only about 165 yards, i would stay away from the huge guns like the .300 mags and all that. i hunt here in ky i alot of thick stuff and i use a .35 caliber and i have killed 3 with it. drops them in their tracks. anything from a 30-30 to a .260 would be a good gun.
