Planning a bow hunt for elk in Sept. in the Arapaho Nat'l Forest near Ute Peak. Have hunted SW Colorado but never this unit.
We are flat-landers (Georgia) but lean and hard hunting. Where we go we walk. Any info appreciated.

I've hunted deer there numerous times (rifle, usually mid-Oct, backpack in 2-3 miles), and muzzleloader elk once. I was quite successful on deer, but it's gone downhill over the last 5-8 years and I quit going there. One year a herd of 50+ elk came right by our tent overnight. I went back last year and the number of hunters had increased dramatically. The one time I was after elk, I saw several decent bulls, but had a cow tag.
Elk will likely be pretty high during archery season. This area is steep - if you access off Ute Peak road you can start pretty high. Or you can access from Acorn Creek trailhead, but it's a long way to the top.
Good luck and get in shape.
