Well I hunt deer in 181 and this year it looks like I might be lucky to draw. I've never hunted elk but was thinking of putting in for a cow tag tonight in case I don't draw deer. Am I waisting my money? My son (13) will definietly draw his doe tag and this is only his 2nd season, so I won't change units on him. I see plenty of elk sign where we hunt but none of it is fresh. I know they take elk in this unit but it is not prime and the success rates are low. I imagine they are up alot higher still (up towards Rabbit Ears) in Oct. Any one have any thoughts or suggestions?

If success rates are low.....I'd be skeptical, if you're a resident, why not though, what's a cow tag cost? I applied for poitns only as a non res and it was $79 or something, so I assume tis that price or less, which isn't much to eat if you don't get one.....and you may get lucky. But I'd plan on just having the tag in case I saw one, not really plannin gon harvesting one.

I'm resident. I was thinking that if eithere we strike out on the doe sceen or if I don't get a doe tag, I can head higher and still get some hunting in. I'm going to try and get up to scout the higher elevations this summer. It's definitely a plan "B". I'd be interested if anyone can give any suggestions on where to look with in the unit to make my scouting more effective.

Due to vacation time, I'm stuck with the 2nd rifle. My friend finds better success in the later seasons as well. I'm basing information off the interactive maps on the DOW web site. I hope to confirm Elk locations on a scouting trip.

You,re confusin me? Bucks and does are both under prescribed, so I think you will get either one if you applied that way. You also, get unit 27, for deer. As far as elk, cows are also under prescribed also, in 2nd rifle. If ya didnt put in for a draw, you would more than likely get a leftover if ya wanted. You,re correct with it bein a little early, but, if ya get up on top of "Little Woolford" or "Big Woolford you have a good chance of runnin into them.
Do a little fishin at Woolford this summer and get to the tops andscout around.

270 - thanks I'll try Woolford. The DOW shows the area to the W of the Res as being the main winter range. I've been wanting to get my conoe on that res anyway.
181 was undersubscribed last year but there were very few leftover licences. So few (I think it was less than 20 for each sex) that I didn't even bother trying. I had a buck tag last year. My buddy and I are guessing that there probably won't be any left overs this year.

Middle to end of May the rainbows and Kokes are pressed up within50 yds. or so of the Dam. We usually walk down the rip-rap and bank fish!
The river below the dam is awsome also!
