RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
Good luck all! I'm heading out this afternoon to try to locate some birds. I've made 4 trips this month, and I've yet to have a bird respond to my crow call or owl hoots. Maybe today will be different.
|
RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
slee.....try using a peacock screamer....or if ya have a elk bugle....they work awesome......or.....go get ya a small pocket air horn Good Luck to all this week... :)
|
RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
Good luck to everyone on the opener. Be safe and post lots of turkey pics next week!
|
RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
Wayne, I've tried the peacock, pileated woodpecker, coyote, crow, owl, and whistled like a hawk. They aren't talking. I thought about using my elk diaphragm, but haven't tried it yet. And I may get a pocket air horn before I head your way in May. I didn't get out this afternoon(kids didn't want to go), but I've got permission from the misses to go out tomorrow afternoon BY MYSELF!!!!! Sorry, but they've been with me the last 3 out of 4 trips I've made. 5, 3, and 17 months are a little too young to start the hunting tradition with. Plus it confines me to the roads. By the way Wayne, did you get my e-mail? I got word back that the 1st one didn't go through. Good luck everybody. Bust a big 'un!

RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
Robb, sounds like you need to keep a slingshot by the back door. Hope the weather is doing better today for you. It has been REALLY windy over here on the west side with lots of off and on rain. I got soaked yesterday riding my bike looking over a new area for turkeys. I've got to retreat my ECWCS suit. The water just soaked into the fabric. When you're riding a bike, that means you get pretty sweatty. What do you guys use to recondition your Gore-Tex suits? Is it something the wife can pick up on post? I e-mailed Adventuretech out of Spokane that has the contract to make the ECWCS suits for Uncle Sam. I'm waiting to see what they say to use. I'm thinking of using Nikwax TX-Direct Wash-in treatment that recoats breathable rainsuits. It is recommended for Gore-Tex. Have a good one. Good luck to everybody on the gobbler opener tomorrow.

RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
WE JUST GO AND GET ANOTHER GORTEX JAKCET, I AGREE THEY DON'T WORK 100 % FOR KEEPING OUT THE RAIN. WHEN WE CLEAN OURS WE WASH THEM BY THEMSELSVES WITH A CAN OF COKE, CLEANS ALMOST ALL THE STAINES OUT OF THE JACKET AND PANTS.
|
RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
Hey Robb, I heard back from Adventuretech about my suit. They pretty much said the same thing. I told him I was given the suit by a friend who is retired Army. He said that's what happens to the ones that need retreating or are really worn, they become garbage or gifts. I'm gonna try to retreat it and see how it works. I've heard the coke trick, but that can't be good for 'em. Do you use it straight or dilute it with water? I'm just glad it turns some water, so I'll try to revive the water repellency. Can't beat the price, and I usually don't bowhunt in heavy rain. Makes bloodtrailing kinda tough. Have a good one.

RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
Here's a post I put up on the Turkey Hunting forum yesterday... :) Like everyone else....they were tight lipped here also...........untill 11:00a.m.......then all hell broke loose...Had about 4 of em triple gooblin about 100 yd's from us for 2 hour's....trouble was....they had lot's of hen's with em....I got the boss hen all rilled up.....but she just would'nt come all the way in.....could'nt rush em to split em up cus they were in the wood's were ya could'nt really see good enough to see which way the hen's would go..and which way the tom's would go....about 1:30p.m. they left the area....so we moved to a new spot to work some other bird's....got caught in about the same situation as the morning hunt....tom's gobblin hung up with hen's......we did see around 60-70 deer....and 6 yote's......it even snowed on us this morning....and that dang boss hen just would'nt shut up.. :)....Gonna hit it hard again in the morning...
|
RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
Well......It was a totaly different story today....we thought we had some bird's paterned this morning....so we got to our spot's early figuring to put the ambush on em....after they were about 1/2hr. late in showing up...I happened to take a look behind me....and low and behold...there were 3 bird's walking by about 25-30yd's from us....all looked like hen's....then looked at the chest of the one bringing up the rear....and what to ya know...it had a beard hanging from it....so I told Rob..[Rob and his brother Ray were both out guest's this week....they have a family farm around the george washington area, and took me and Diane out for a great goose hunt this last season......'Super nice family that I'm proud to say are our friend's]...........anyway....I say to Rob..."There's a Jake....Shoot it"....Boom.....1 dead bird....was gonna show em the difference between a jake fan and a tom fan....as were looking at it...we noticed it was a perfect fan...no tall center feather's....it was a bearded hen....So we brought it back to the house....put on a pot of coffee....took a breather.....and headed out again....Got about 4-5 tom's a gobblin.....but they were hung up with the hen's, so after about 2 hr's, we were headed back to the house cus they were planninmg on heading back home about 1:00p.m......just as we get to the lower edge of my bottom field.....gobble....gobble....so we hit the deck....they were only about 15-20 yd's in frount of us....but in the brush.....we layed therte for around 15 minute's....then saw the bird's walking around the side of us....they knew something was'nt right.....but were'nt that scared I guess...and they started pecking their way down the hill.....so Ray and myself decided we were gonna try and circle em.....and see if he could'nt get a shot.....8 1/2in. beard...3/4 in spur's.....great bird.....corse when he shot it....the tom rolled all the way down the bottom of a steep hill.....but it was worth it.. ....They've both just left with their first Turkey's.....sure hope now their both addicted so we can do it all over again....They made my week, and Diane and myself truly enjoyed their visit and friendship......sorry this is so long.....just thought ya'll would want to hear the story.. :).....Hope everyone else is finding some bird's..... Wayne

RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
Hope your brother's having a good hunt Robb......Kitsap Caller called me this afternoon....said he'd been out all day hunting.....on his way back to camp...he spooked up a tom at about 35yd's running away from him.....he took a shot.......but missed.. :(.......So.....he's gonna show up here early in the morning with his buddy, and I'll take em out. Wash and his wife are headed over here tomorrow evening, and we'll all be hunting together Thurs., Fri., Sat., and Sunday morning....Really looking forward to it

RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
Good evening everyone. This topic was dropping a little too low on the list so I thought I would bump it up a bit. You would think it is hunting season or something as quiet as everyone is. Anybody else not hunting this weekend?
|
RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
not me, to much crap going on for me. never really got into the turkey thing, though i hear its pretty exciting.
|
RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
Well, I'm back from turkey camp. What a freakin' harsh dash of reality having to go back to work after living the good life for a while - need to hit a lottery and make my living from hunting. Any of ya'll have any luck with those easterns? From what I saw of the merriams, it might be a bit early to hunt em'. They were not really chasing the hens too much, and there were HUGE bachelor flocks.
|
RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
AFTERNOON ALL, I STARTED A NEW SHIFT TODAY, OH JOY, WELL NOT MUCH HAPPEND THIS WEEKEND, DID SOME YARD WORK AND WATCHED A ROOSTER GET ATTACKED BY 4 HAWKS, FIRST TIME I'D EVER SEEN IT. THE ROOSTER MADE BUT IT LOOKED LIKE HE WASN'T GOING TO FOR A WHILE.
|
RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
WANWTF, I'm sorry you didn't have any luck. BUT it sounds like I may be timing my trip on May 8 pretty well. Maybe me and Moose Eyes will tag out on some eager birds. He is going about 5 days earlier than me, so one of us should be timing it perfectly. I'm 0 for 1 so far on Easterns, and I don't know if I'll get to make another trip or not. I can't wait 'til May 8.
Hunt hard, live right, and tell your kids you love 'em! |

RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
Welcome aboard Gator99. I live down the road in South Hill. Give us a little info about ya. Do you bow or gun for elk and deer?
WANWTF, I hate that you early guys didn't have much luck. I was hoping to hear more exciting stories before I head over in 2 weeks. But I am glad to hear that they are getting the silent treatment crap out of the way before I head over. I dealt with that last year. I know it ain't any fun. Matt, I don't know if I'm going to get to go any before I head over to the east side. If I do, I'll definitely give you a yell. I'd love to head east in good shape to for a slam, but that may just be wishful thinking. Hunt hard, live right, and tell your kids you love 'em! |

Hey everyone I just found this forum. I'm still chasing the wiley easterns with no luck yet.
It's not illegal unless you get caught |
RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
Just checking in.. :)....Hope everyone's having a good hunt.......Welcome to the forum BrushChimp
|
RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
You must working those turkey pretty hard Wayne. Haven't heard much from you in a while.
Welcome Gator and BC. BC, you sure are right about those Easterns down your way being wiley. They're pretty tight lipped too! |
RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
There beyond tight lipped! A cattle prod in their @#$%^& might, get them to gobble, and thats a BIG might. I think the state had all the voice boxes removed from all the turks they claim to have planted....Spent 2 full days hunting, around the Capitol state forest area and found a half a handful of turds(no doubt sprinkled about about by WDFW staff) and not so much as a peep! Everyone I talk too, that hunts down southwest says "their doing great!!" Well if what I seen was "doing great", than just fair must mean extinct. Just what do these birds eat in the early spring, is keying in on food sorce the key? What kind of habitat do they prefer, second growth, reprod, recent cuttings, alder thickets? They don't seem to be anything like easter washington birds, yes I know their a different speices, but there becomes a point, where a turkey is a turkey is a turkey! Thanks for letting me vent........Hey Bob when we gonna do this again??? *LOL*
|
RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
Moose Eyes...not so sure I'm working the bird's hard.....think the role's are reversed........they seem to have me working over time... Wash....don't feel bad....they've even got quieter than they were last week here
|
RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
Wash, what are the names of some guys you have talked that were from the southwest? I've been hearing some gobbling just not a lot. They aren't doing great.
It's not illegal unless you get caught |
RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
Brushchimp, when I said "their doing great" I meant the turkey population in general, not people success at turkey hunting. Sorry should have explained that a little better in the first post. Sorry to hear that Wayne, I didn't think they could get much quieter? *L*
|
RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
Brushchimp, these bird you are hearing, are they on private property or public land??? And are you hunting the Pe Ell area, or are you going further south??
