Default Elk hunting

Looking for an elk hunt in 08.
Like to call and sit wallows. Anyone know of a good outfitter or an area that might be good? I have quite a few points for Colorado but would consider other states.

Try Phantom Canyon. He may give you a deal with 5 or more people. There is also a guy in Gunnison that does real well but the name excapes me. Oh, Nelson is it but I do not know company name.

What kind of a Elk hunt are you looking for? Rifle, Muzzle, archery. I did a archery Elk hunt in 06' w/ Winterhawk Outfitters. White River National Forest, Flat tops wilderness. Well known for its large Elk population in Colorado. It was my first Elk hunt, so I can't do a comparision for you. But I will say myself & friend that went were treated excellent. We got into Elk, I came close to a 40yd bowshot on a nice 5x6. He just wouldn't crest the knoll. The Outfitter treated us excellent, very professional, and treat you like family. Its expensive, but so well wroth it. I really truly enjoyed being there. We've alreadly booked our trip with them for Sept. 08', and I can't wait to get back there. www.winterhawk.com

They've been on Outdoor Ch. several times in past w/ Wild Outdoors-Jay Gregory, Outfitters Journal, Babe Winkleman, and Larry Lasoki has hunted with them, before started his own show Gettin Close.

Good to hear that they are a good outfit. I did a DIY hunt in the Flattops a few years back smack dab (unknown to me) right in the middle of "their" hunting area and the guides were not happy nor friendly with me. They actually dropped one of their hunters off within 75 yards of me to hunt on opening morning of the rifle season (it was obviously very dark and they did not know I was there) and he was not too happy when I started shining my flashlight at him. Always a sticky situation when dealing with a mans livlyhood who depends on customer satisfaction and repeat customers.

Good info guys, I was gonna ask the same thing.. BGhunter, if you are on public land and you beat the guys in there than by all rights that is your area to hunt and I would be PISSED if someone got mad at me for beating them there. Guide or not I'd tell them where to stick it...

I agree, it is public land and BG had the right to hunt there. Especially if he was there first. I can certainly understand how Winterhawk guides would feel on running into other hunters, seeing its their lively hood. When I did the archery hunt, it was also cow rifle season, and we ran into a few DIY hunters. My guide made comments, likedarn rifle hunter. But he'd take me in another direction is all. Anyone we did run into he was nice too. So must've just been the guide you ran into. I know they do have problems with DIY hunters using their drop camps, and also doing damage to them sometimes. Winterhawk has a Outfitter permit for 250 sq miles. All that means is no other guide service can guide in that area. But they can't stop DIY hunters.
I'm hoping to draw a muzzlerloader tag for 08' season. I have 1 Pref. Pt. So not sure what my chances are. If I don't get it, just go with a bow again. But I can't wait to get back to Winterhawk. I was watching hunting videos with them past wk. Just to help ease my appetite!
