My son and I got our first duck this weekend. I thought I knew how to dress and clean the bird, but now I have a duck and dont know what to do. We are new to hunting. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
We have one Teal and would like to learn from the process..
Thanks in advance,

Here's how I do it .
Cut off the legs , use a knife to cut around the knee joint ,you then should bend the joint and take it apart.
Cut the neck off , I use poultry shears
Cut the wings off just before the breast ,I use poultry shears
Under a wing the breast skin is thin, make a small cut and peel the skin off the whole bird like a orange ( easy if still warm)
You can now just cut the breast out and bone it like chicken ,I also take the legs and thys .
If you want to you can split it up the back and gut it to roast the whole bird .
DO NOT over cook duck it will be like trying to eat a hockey puck.

Another method is to breast out. Cut just above the anus work the knife up to the bottom of the neck pull the skin back and cut closely along the bone. Then pull/cut away the skin from the legs. The breast and legs has the bulk of the meat in the bird. I use this method if doing it at home for it less messy. Also use the above method in the field. Remember to leave a wing on if dressing in the field to abide by game laws.

i make an incision from base of neck to where the breast ends. then i peel the skin away from the breast till i see the where the wing joins the breast. cut with scissors. then, right where the bottom of the breast is, pop a finger in and pull up toward the head, breast pops out whole. cut neck. grab feet ( one at a time) and push them into the open cavity(to get leg and thigh meat). snip snip, done deal. takes less than 2 minutes, no waste. works best on super cold (almost frozen ) ducks.

Really depends on what you are going to do with the bird-some like to skin them, some like to breast them, and some like to pluck them and leave the skin on. All depends on how you are going to eat the thing.
