The 3.5" shell just fills in the patteren a little better .
The pellets will not kill any farther because the pellets slow down just as fast.

So..... the extra length in a longer shell is used to hold more shot, the restriction of the choke controls the density of the pattern, right???
Now, you base your choke selection on the expected range of your target; you want the tightest collection of shot at your expected range. Am I right so far???
But why would you choose a longer shell length over a shorter length??

I shoot the longer lengths to obtain a higher payload, or more pellets in the air to achieve higher pattern densities at any reasonable hunting range, I also use more open chokes than a lot of people.
