Scary last day of 2007 Early Season
Hunting by myself this morning, went to start picking up decoys in the swamp and began sinking in the muck...no water, just muck, nearly to above my waist line.......could have been a bad situation, but was able to pull myself out.....any other stories of something similar happening to anyone out there? I could see where this could end up bad for some unlucky hunter one day. Please Stay Safe Everyone!

I was out fishing actually once, me, my brother, and a friend of ours. It was a private lake with awesome fishing, about 600 acres of lake. Well, I was wading along, got onto the bank to get around a blowdown, and hopped off the bank into muck up to my bellybutton. I tried to wiggle free and went up to armpits and I'm 6'10"! I hollered for help and my bro and friend pulled me out by arms, dislocating a shoulder. My shoes ended up staying in the bottom but I made it out. I am fairly certain that if they hadn't been there I would have had a watery grave. Scared the hell out of me.

About 10 years ago I was walking a freshly built dyke across a rice field and sunk up to my waist in the blink of an eye. I landed on a telephone pole that we used to help form up the dyke, otherwise nothing would have stopped me from going all the way down. Took me about 10 minutes to wiggle out, and my boots stayed behind, but all told I felt pretty lucky.

I was crossing a knee - thigh deap area last fall
When I started sinking into the muck ...............FAST
I could not pull a foot out without driving the other foot deaper into the muck
So I took the decoy bag off my back and layed over it
That allowed me to get both feet out
I then used the decoys to help me float/ push off the bottom and work my way to the dike
It was 40 degrees outand the temps were falling , with a 20 MPH wind ,I was soaked from head to toe
I took the long way back to the truck to make sure I avoided the muck
I could not feel my hands or face when I got to the truck
In the parking lot , I striped and changed into a set of dry cloths
But I had to sit in the truck with the heater going for 10 min
Before I was warm enough to put my stuff in the back of the truck so I could head home
