No, but I think you need to weigh the time you will spend training versus how many more years the dog will be able to hunt. I.E. a four year old may still have 5-7 yrs. left. A nine year old, no.

It depends on what you want out of the dog.
If its a lab, then retrieving is naturally built into the dog. If you have a good relationship with the dog and understand each other well, then you can probably have the dog pick up a few birds for you. But, you aren't going to win any gold medals with him on ESPN.
The dog will enjoy the time outside, and you will likely enjoy the time with your dog. Just don't have unrealistic expecations for him, and you might be suprised how well he can do.
