A fun hunt in 30+ MPH winds
I took 2 freinds out this morning to hunt a marsh just off Lake Erie
They both thought I was NUTZ!!
We has 20 MPH winds and rain as I set out the decoys ,weighted keels with extra weight added to help them stay upright.
I placed them in any semi protected areas .
Could not even see at shooting time , but around 7:10 we could see , but the wind had picked up to 30 MPH with 50 MPH gusts.
We had white caps on the other side of the pot hole , 40 yds away.
But the ducks wanted off the open water and were flying in at cat tail heigth , droping into the decoys like mad.
One problem , I could not convince the other 2 that you had to lead a duck that apeared to be only flying 3-5 mph into the wind .
I had my 6 in 20 min or so .
Finaly after a lot of missing we had a Mallard swiming to the decoys at 25 yds .
I told Joe to shoot it , His patteren just missed and they both figured out that you have to lead into the wind .
We ended at 8:30 with our 18 ducks and a shooting lesson
10 Mallards , 3 Gadwalls , 1 Ringneck and 4 Woodducks
