the only one i ever shot at and the only one i ever bagged i used a target load...i think a remington sts handicap load or something like that...1 1/8th oz of 7.5s....knocked it down...did the job....but i had an open shot and got kinda lucky....this year if i hunt them im using a heavier load....dad said he had 3 flushes in an hour the other day.....hope i can go with him one day....he cant hit them lol.....somethin about me and moving game...i just seem to be a natural.....that grouse i killed flushed between us.....he didnt even have his gun up yet and i already fired my shot....i had another round in and ready to go before he had his gun to his shoulder because he didnt think i dropped it and was still shouldering his gun...they arent BIG birds..it dont take alot to kill them...but takes a good hit....and its hard to get sometimes depends how and where you hunt...i want to use a heavy load this year....but dont want them exploding in the air.....guess ill find out what happens if i make it out.....

I assume you are referring to ruffed grouse and I use 7.5's and 8's. Being delicate game birds, I have also taken them with 9's when woodcock have been part of the bag.
