Default Problems With Getting Lab Gun Ready

I have a black lab. When she was 5 months old there were a bunch of fireworks set off close by her without us knowing. Now whenever she sees a gun or hears a gun she gets really nervous. Is there any way that I can train her to get used to gun fire? I really want to train her to pheasant hunt. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

i've heard that if you continue to shoot the gun while they're eating they'll eventually get used to it...just a thought...Mark

Happy Hunting =)

I had a GSP that was pretty bad and the way I broke him was taking him hunting ,but kept on a leash . I carried a gun but my partner did all the shooting .It a seemed to give him reassurance and he did get better . I have a lab now that if I miss he will bring the wad back about half the time . He sees a gun and he is ready to go . good luck with your dog .

Try making loud noises while your dog is eating. Start by clapping your hands loud, gradually increase the noise by pots and pans or a cap gun works really well. Eventually your dog should get the idea to associate the loud noise with something good like food or a dead pheasant for her to retrieve. This is just one of many ideas but, it seemed to work well with my lab.
