If I'm on certain state land that requires steel shot, I like to use no. 4 for pheasants. When using lead, I usually use no. 5 for pheasants, 6 for Chukar, and 7 1/2 for quail.

for squirrells and such, 7 1/2 or 8. Then I use 6 or 4 for pheasant depending on what part of the year it is. Earlier lighter, later heavier. But this is in Iowa where it gets pretty cold.

I like the federal PF loads in 5 shot for pheasants. They are 1500fps and really seem to hit hard and have a long range. I don't really hunt any of the smaller game too much, so I can't help you there. Season opens in Iowa this weekend, and I can't wait!

For small game I like to use 7 1/2 and 6 shot. For pheasants, I usually use no. 5 but on windy days and long shots I like using size 4. I like the Federal PF loads at 1500fps too, I've never shot anything that hit so hard and so well at long ranges like this shell can. For most game I like using the modified choke, but if I know there are chances of long shots, I just use the full choke and leave it.
