20 gauge
Hey guys anyone use a 20 gauge for turkey? How well does it nock em down and what is your max range? What choke/ gun/ loads do you use? I use an 870 remington 20 gauge but I haven't gotten a bird yet, it patterns well with federal 3 inch #5 through the primos jellyhead, I will be trying ti with #6 hevi shot soon.

Last year I killed 2 gobblers with my 12 ga. and 2 with my 20 guage. All 4 died in their tracks. One with the 20 ga. was at 40 yards. Both guns are 870's. I use hevishot #5 in the 20 guage and it throws a great pattern. The only 2 differences I can tell between the 20 and the 12 is the amount of shot and a great amount of recoil difference. I'll most likely have the 20 with me on opening morning this year. It's lighter and like I said the recoil difference is really nice. That being said, I do believe that the 12 ga. is the gun of choice for most people. The most important thing is to know is how your gun will pattern before you go on the hunt. Good luck with the 20.

Had a Wichester 1300 in 20ga. The best turkey gun I ever had! I [like a fool] sold it to help pay for an over and under I purchased. I knock down turkeys at 40yds with that gun. Shot 3" #4 copper platted shot out of that gun. Killed a lot of turkeys with that gun, but the trick was to stay away from extra full chokes. I used a standard full choke and the gun patterned like a charm.

Last year I used the regular full choke and it had a really nice pattern. I'm trying to decide if I'm going to get the hevi-choke tube or not. Wish I could find someone that I know to borrow one before I go and purchase one. Hope this helps. BOB

I hunt with my winchester 1100, 20ga. a few years ago I was using 3in, regular turkey loads with no choke. now I tried something different last year I bought a box of those new heavy load shells by Remmington. I shot a 19 1/2lb tom last year with those shells and dropped him dead at 40yrds. 40-45yrds is the farthest I will ever take a shot at a bird.
