I am an experienced turkey hunter having hunted the past 13 years in two states and have taken many birds. All of these have been Easterns and I would like to get started on my Slam!! I would like to go on a do-it-yourself hunt so it will have to be public land. I have heard that Rios are probably the easiest but I heard Texas doesnt have much public land. I am also considering South Dakota. But still I need more info on places to hunt there also. So....Who has done this? What suggestions do you have as a place to try next? Thanks for your input!!

Texas has very little public land and almost none in the Rio's habitat. Kansas or OK may have some public Rio hunting, I've never checked tho. For Merriams, the Black Hills area or I hear the area in NW Nebraska has some good public land Merriams hunting. NE tags are $65 and you can get two birds.

There is Management land in the North end of Texas on the Pan handle. NE has some public with Both Roi's and merriams , and Kansas has some aswell for Rio's.
The Black Hills is a place that every turkey hunter should exspirence his or her merriams hunt , something you will never forget.
Florida is going to be the hardest , because of the Over hunted Management areas they have. Private is next to Nil.
Planning the areas you intend to hunt and studing the States and areas ids the best background check to become successfull. There is lots of info on these such States and lots of birds to hunt. Starting here is one of the best things you can do...BT
