The barrel on my turkey gun is 22". I like it for a couple reasons. I shoot an SP-10 so it take a little weight off of my gun and the shorter barrel makes it alot easier to swing or move around when needed. You know those gobblers dont always come straight in. A shorter barrel may make it a little less forgiving when it comes down to aiming especially for a kid, so i would go with a double bead , rifle sights, or a red dot or scope.

billy bear - this is probably obvious, but if youre having a barrel cut down I'm assuming that youre having choke tubes installed by a gunsmith? If not, you may have no choke left and that's not helpful when needing tight patterns while turkey hunting. (Depending on the make of gun, it can be cheaper to just buy an extra short barrel.)- - I have a Remington Super Mag with a 23" barrel and it's very handy moving around in the woods when turkey hunting. I have a scope on my gun, so sight distance isn't a factor. Ballistically, there is little difference in shotgun barrels of at least 21" in length. (Read that somewhere but can't remember where.) I just had a "Poly Choke" cut off of a 31 inch barrel down to 22" and a choke tube installed for my Ithica 37. A new barrel lists at about $220.00. The whole job cost me $75.00. I like a short barrel for some of the places that I hunt. I might be in some pretty thick stuff and need to swing around a little. Also, it makes it easier to move through the brush. So far I haven't noticed any loss of pattern with a short barrel, but a careful aim is a little more critical.
Hope it works out for you.
