Default RE: Patterned the 10ga today!

pointshoot777,
i have fired several turkey rounds from my sp-10 so far. i can tell you that gun is a DREAM to shoot versus my UNPORTED mossberg 835 w/3 1/2" turkey loads. i can shoot about 5 rounds from the mossberg before i call it a day. the remington i think i could shoot all day with no problem the gas operated semi's really take alot of the recoil away from the shooter, not to mention it weighs 11 lbs. i made the mistake last year when i started to pattern my mossberg of leaning against a solid cement shooting bench. it was the one and only round i fired that day. with no give in my body the stock came back as far as it could then rode up my shoulder to say hi to my cheek. ive never been hit that hard in my life and i was involved in kick boxing for about 6 years. oh well you live and you learn i guess. im sure the 10 ga 3oz loads will kick more but i doubt as much as the mossberg. by the way i also have a digital camcorder so i will post a few of the targets for you to see or i could email them to you so i dont get tore up on this site like those poor other guys did.

gobble stopper, I have bought mixed boxes of loads from Nitro last year and this year and they let me get 2 of each shot size. Got my last box within the last 2 weeks. Either they are changing policy or you caught him on a bad day. I suggest you e-mail or call Sandy. She is great and will fix you right up however you want the order.

I shoot the 101L and it pushes 3 ounces out at 1200 feet per second. Not sure how that compares to factory loads. But mine are #4 nickel shot, so I'm not worried about energy.

A tip on patterning. My SP10 is a relatively heavy gun and is gas operated. Even so, the 3 ounce loads are murder on your shoulder. I don't worry about that in the woods, cause you don't feel it. But at the patterning bench it can cause problems with jerking the trigger and flinching. I finally started carrying a heavy jacket to the range with me. I roll it up and put it between the gun and shoulder. Now I know this will not simulate field conditions exactly, but I figure it is best to have the gun steady and not pull off than otherwise.

No jakes!

Guys those 3 oz loads dont kick trust me .I just cant figure out when Im shooting sitting down why I can sometimes see my tennishoe go over the top of the barrel. There is the time I shot with my shoulder up against a tree and had a bruise the size of a grapefruit the next day. I must of fell and dont remember it. Who cares as long as the bird doesnt get back up.

bobgobble2,
"how do they look on paper?" dont know, havent shot them yet. from reading the posts above i dont think anyone else has either. looks like broken scope shot some but didnt mention what patterns he got, just a bruised shoulder. i will hopefully, if the weather cooperates, be shooting some regular (winchester, federal, reimgton)10 ga turkey loads tommorrow or tuesday.

Bobgobble 2 I have shot a lot of nitros in the 3oz load and I wasnt kidding about the kicking,Actually I have had a quite a few put me on my back from a sitting position. Ok here is what I get from 40 measured yards with the barrel not hanging over. 3oz 101 L #4nickel with hast 685 I can put in the 180s in a 10in circle. With a win turkey head it has put 87 in the head and neck. I have patterned about all of rays 10 turkey loads. I have got all of the test patterns wrote down if anyone is interested. I like the larger shot. I have tested a lot of choke combos and probably shot about 75 of his shells. I take the weight out of my NE stock and that lightens it about 2 lbs I believe. I think 10 bore gets better than I do with the 101 Ls.

Mr Longbeard, yes its a NewEnglander with a long barrel and a 685 hastings choke. I also have a 675 choke that does very well. I also have a factory short barrel that I test often but havent found a load choke combo that will match the long barrel. I dont care what anyone says about long barrels not shooting better I think they will. The Outlaw Turkey Shoots have a 5 or 6 ft limit for a reason. I think it really depends on the gun.
