Default Scouting turkeys

Scouting The Wild Turkey :

The In's and Out's could take a day to talk about when it comes to the Wild Turkey. Too start right Study the bird the best you can,Video's , Books, Mag's knowing his ways on his terms is the best start. The next thing is learning to scout and understanding the things you need to know. Most hunters do not scout right , they will walk a woods Blowing a Turkey call listen for anwsers and look for tracks , that somes it up ! they have the place scouted! WRONG ! Scouting is a form of Studing aswell. Starting with the food supply and working your way to dusting sights , Strut Zones, Roosting areas. Then sudy the Terrain , Ridge Lines , Fields , Nesting areas, Places where turkeys like to spend time. Travel and exscape routes looking for the scat. The boundry lines of the area hunted and what kind of habitat is there to hold birds. Then work on the HangUp's Fences , creeks, places in the terrain that Hang up the birds when coming to your calls. This way you understand what is going on in your mind at the time of working a bird, also helps up against the hunter that has not did the home work. Leave your calls at home you'll only make it harder to call the birds to your gun when the season starts. Anything to add ?...BT

I like them with Long Sharp Spurs....

You summed it up real good BOSSTOM,I liked The part about leaving the turkey calls at home before season,Down here where I live ,seems the two months before turkey season starts everyone is in the woods usuing a mouth call or box call to heare the birds anwser them,All they are doing is getting the birds use to their calls.

One other thing that doesn't pertain to scouting but to Turkey Hunting,If you hunt on private land,Ask the Landowner two to three month's or longer before season starts, if you can hunt his or her property,Even if you already have permission tell them a week or two before ,Most landowners will respect the hunter that does this.

Good post BT!You hit the nail on the head. One thing about scouting is not only does it swing those odds of being successful in bringing a bird into gun range by knowing and understanding terrain and your particular birds habits but in todays turkey hunting world it helps in giving you the edge on those that haven't scouted your area such as on public land. Its a great feeling when a bird gobbles you know right where he's at or if he doesn't you still have a good idea where he is because you've done your homework!<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>
