Spur length ?

Spur length ?
Just wanted to know what some other hunter thought about the age of a turkeyt with 1 1/8in to 1 1/4in spurs. I think that a bird with 1 1/8in spurs is deffinetly(spelling) a three year old and a bird with 1 1/4 in could be a four year old.

depends on the part of the country and the terrain in which they live.
country with hard rocky,hilly land will have less spurs than a bird that lives in a river bottom with no rocks and mainly soft soil.
the hard rocky land will keep the spurs wore down some what.

Ok let me try this a different way.
Do you think a turkey with a 1 1/8in curved sharp spur would be a three year old?
Do you think a turkey with a 1 1/4in curved sharp spur could be a four year old?
These birds will have been harvested in the north eastern mountains of united states of america (Md,Pa,Ny).

Like it has been said the area depends on a lot of things. But it should be known that most turkeys with one inch spurs or larger are considered to be at least three year old turkeys. When they hit one and a quarter inch they move to four year old birds. That is for Easterns in average terrains.

Mr.Longbeard I agree with ya,but the guys do make a very good point.Right here in N.Calif where I hunt in the Sacramento valley the ground on the east side of the valley is mainly lava rock due to the erruption of Mt Lassen way back when!The west side of the valley has very little rock make-up and consiquently the birds taken off the west side have longer sharper spurs.I hunt the east side alot and take alot of toms with either rounded off spurs or even broke-off or chipped.It is much easier to tell the age of the gobblers off the west side and your description is about right!
