Close to a Turkey
I went out to look at an acerage for sale today and the wierdest thing happend. I got out of the car and looked over toward the barn and this Tom was running right at me! It was puffed up about half way. When it got just a few feet from me it went on full strut. I walked to the front of the house. There were two hens with him. He came up 3 feet from me and started gobbling. Well I looked around and there was two toms and two hens there. They were all tame obviously but one tom and one hen were tamed Eastern Wild Turkeys. They other two were domestic birds. Even thought they were tame, it was cool to be that close to one. And to have it be gobbling 3 feet from me was cool. I couldn't quiet pet it. It would back off if I tried but it stayed 3-4 feet from me, on full strut, pacing back and forth and turning its fan toward me. It was pretty cool!

RE: Close to a Turkey
I was doing some filming for a Western hunting magazine last year and I was able to tape a turkey in full strut by my buddies feet. It has both the turkey and his feet in the same frame. What a thrill. He finally got the bird ,only after we had full enjoyment of watching the king of the spring.

RE: Close to a Turkey
my first turkey came 3 feet from me to my side, gobbled , i about jumped out of my britches, it was the coolest thing i have ever had happen in the woods at the time.....nothing tops a wild turkey doing that....a friend of mine has wild/domesticated turkeys.....we practice callin', we'll pull up and they come running, do yard work, they are out there, it's really nice going over there....i can get the female to lay down when it's mating season, any other time she wants to bite me....she's left bruises on me, i never realized a turkey bite would hurt, but they have some power in them beaks, lol....oh and a word of warning , dont get eye level with a strutting tom[]he'll try and get ya with his spurs....[:@]
